Chapter 2 - Emma Was Supposed to Swear Daniel Was an Unsafe Father

Daniel did not open the document until Lily was safely in her nursery with him beside her.

Victoria wanted to follow.

Daniel told her not to.

Emma remained downstairs.

For several minutes Daniel simply sat beside Lily’s crib and watched his daughter settle. She had not been injured. She had been frightened by the sudden movement and the shouting, but after a bottle and several minutes against her father’s chest, her breathing became calm again.

Only then did Daniel unfold the cream document.

The heading was formal.

DRAFT HOUSEHOLD WITNESS DECLARATION.

Emma Carter’s full name appeared beneath it.

Then came numbered paragraphs.

Daniel read the first.

I have personally observed Daniel Ashford handling infant Lily Ashford in an unsafe and physically careless manner on multiple occasions.

His stomach tightened.

Second paragraph.

I have observed Mr. Ashford consuming alcohol while acting as Lily’s sole caregiver and becoming verbally aggressive when questioned about his ability to care for her.

Daniel kept reading.

On at least two occasions, I witnessed Lily crying for an extended period while Mr. Ashford ignored her because he was occupied with business matters.

Then:

Mrs. Victoria Ashford has repeatedly intervened to protect the child and maintain a stable household routine.

Daniel stopped.

Some words had a different rhythm from the rest.

Too polished.

Too strategically placed.

At the bottom was a declaration that the statement was true to Emma’s personal knowledge.

The signature line was blank.

An attorney’s office name appeared in the footer.

Daniel knew the firm.

Not personally.

Victoria had used them years earlier to review the couple’s prenuptial agreement.

He read the pages again.

One accusation angered him more than the others because it contained enough truth to sound plausible.

Daniel did sometimes drink wine in the evening while Lily was home.

He had never become intoxicated while caring for her.

He had taken business calls when she cried.

Once, during a forty-minute investor call, he had let Lily fuss in her playpen for several minutes before realizing her diaper had leaked.

He felt terrible afterward.

But Emma had not witnessed half the events described.

He knew because Emma was not even working on several of the dates referenced in an attached chronology.

Daniel carried the document downstairs.

Victoria was standing in the foyer with her arms folded.

Emma waited near the staircase, her posture tense.

Daniel held up the pages.

“Did you have this written?”

Victoria looked at Emma.

“She has no right to possess that.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“It was confidential legal preparation.”

“For what?”

Victoria inhaled slowly.

“Contingency planning.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You had someone draft a sworn statement saying I’m dangerous around Lily.”

“I had counsel prepare options.”

“Using Emma’s name.”

“Because she works here.”

Emma finally spoke.

“She wrote down things she wanted me to say.”

Victoria turned on her.

“You told me you were concerned.”

“No. I told you he works too much.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

She continued. “I told her once I thought you were distracted with the baby because you were on a call. I never said you were dangerous.”

Victoria snapped, “You said he almost dropped Lily.”

Emma shook her head.

“I said he nearly dropped a bottle when Lily kicked it out of his hand.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There.

A bottle became a baby.

Distracted became neglectful.

Wine became unsafe alcohol use.

Ordinary imperfection became a custody narrative.

Then Daniel asked the question that mattered most.

“Why did you need this?”

Victoria looked toward the nursery hallway.

“Because I needed to know Lily would be protected if this marriage ends.”

Daniel stared at her.

“If?”

Victoria did not answer.

He stepped closer.

“Are you planning to leave me?”

Her silence lasted two seconds too long.

Then Emma said quietly, “She already has papers for that too.”

Victoria’s head snapped toward her.

Daniel slowly turned.

“What papers?”

Emma looked at the document in his hand.

May you like

“The ones that say she should stay in the estate with Lily after you’re gone.”
