Chapter 7 - The Consultant’s Notes Showed Vivian Had Been Waiting for Me to “Break”
Through attorneys, proper requests, and eventually discovery in our divorce proceedings, we obtained relevant communications from the educational consultant.
The notes were:
dry.
Professional.
Which made them worse.
Initial consultation:
Emily, age six.
Mother deceased.
Stepmother reports:
grief fixation,
oppositional behavior,
household conflict,
difficulty accepting new maternal figure.
Northwood’s consultant repeatedly advised:
start with local family therapy.
Maintain school stability.
Residential treatment inappropriate without:
significant clinical indicators.
Vivian kept asking:
what would justify:
placement.
The consultant wrote:
Stepmother appears focused on out-of-home option despite recommendation for local support.
Then:
Father has not participated.
Then:
Stepmother reports father is “too guilt-driven” to consider separation but may change position if home behaviors escalate.
Escalate.
There it was.
Not:
if clinical needs worsen.
If behaviors escalate.
The consultant did not know Vivian intended:
anything.
They were recording her words.
Two months before the gala, Vivian scheduled:
another consultation.
She reported:
Emily was increasingly defiant around food,
using Sarah’s belongings “compulsively,”
creating marital conflict.
The consultant again recommended:
family therapy.
Then an appointment was scheduled for:
the morning after the charity gala.
Why that date?
We found an email from Vivian:
Saturday night may be clarifying. Grant will be home after the event. If the current pattern continues, I expect he will finally understand that the household cannot function this way.
Current pattern.
What was supposed to happen:
Saturday night?
Emily would be:
tired.
Coming home early.
Alone with:
Vivian.
The dog bowl had already been placed in:
the cabinet.
The scarf had become one of Vivian’s favorite pressure points.
Was she planning:
exactly what I witnessed?
We could not prove every detail.
But she clearly expected a:
crisis.
Then she planned to speak to the placement consultant the:
next morning.
And that meant the dog-bowl incident may have been intended not merely to punish Emily.
It may have been designed to create the final event Vivian could use to convince:
me.
Except I came home early.
The crisis she wanted me to hear about afterward became the cruelty I witnessed:
myself.
