Chapter 9 - Vivian Had Been Using Sarah’s Scarf to Manufacture Meltdowns

Sarah’s scarf became central because it was:
predictable.
Emily loved it.
Vivian resented:
it.
That created a button Vivian could:
press.
A month before the gala, Emily had one of her worst arguments with Vivian.
I was:
at work.
According to Emily, Vivian took the scarf and put it on a high kitchen shelf.
Emily begged.
Vivian said:
“You can have it when you stop behaving like Sarah is still your mother.”
Emily screamed:
“She is my mother!”
Correct.
Vivian recorded in her incident log:
Severe emotional dysregulation when asked to put away grief object. Screaming, refusal, fixation on deceased parent.
No mention that Vivian had:
taken it.
Then another incident.
Vivian threatened to donate:
Sarah’s old Christmas ornament.
Emily cried.
Log entry:
Breakdown triggered by routine decluttering.
Then:
dinner.
Vivian served something Emily disliked.
Emily asked for:
toast.
Vivian refused.
Emily cried.
Log:
Food-control episode. Child refuses normal meal and demands accommodation.
Piece by piece, Vivian created:
the behavior
then documented:
the reaction.
Not every time.
Emily genuinely had:
grief,
tantrums,
ordinary childhood defiance.
That made the manufactured incidents blend:
in.
My own work schedule helped Vivian.
If I came home after:
eight,
I heard only:
summary.
“Emily had another rough evening.”
I would go upstairs.
Hug:
my daughter.
Tell her:
“Try to listen to Vivian tomorrow.”
There it was.
I had participated in the reinforcement.
Then came one final detail.
David found a calendar note Vivian had made three days before the gala:
Bring blue scarf downstairs Saturday.
She had planned:
access.
Why?
Vivian later claimed she wanted Emily to have it after the event.
Maybe.
But Sarah’s scarf ended up in Vivian’s hand over:
the dog bowl.
And suddenly the sequence looked less like a spontaneous punishment and more like:
staging.
The question was:
what exactly did Vivian expect Emily to do?
The answer came from the only person who had heard Vivian talking to herself before I arrived.
May you like
Emily.
