Chapter 9 - Michael Had Sent Claire Looking for Evidence
Michael’s accountability arrived in a manila folder from his own divorce attorney.
Rachel’s attorney produced it during a voluntary custody-file review.
Not litigation.
Cleanup.
They wanted to identify what materials from Willow Creek had entered:
prior mediation.
Michael saw his own email.
Subject:
Nora school nights
To Claire:
If there’s anything in the clinic chart showing she’s more anxious around Rachel’s transitions, send it. My lawyer says objective documentation matters more than us arguing.
Claire replied:
There are several notes. I’ll pull them.
Michael:
Anything that shows the pattern.
He stared at the phrase.
Anything that shows the pattern.
Not:
Send me the full chart.
Not:
Tell me if clinicians independently found a pattern.
Not:
Make sure Rachel receives context.
He had asked:
for ammunition.
Then another message to his lawyer:
Claire is a pediatric provider and sees this constantly. She believes the instability at Rachel’s is affecting Nora.
The lawyer replied:
Is Claire treating Nora? If so, conflict issues may reduce evidentiary weight.
Michael answered:
She owns the clinic but Nora sees other providers. Claire coordinates care.
The lawyer wrote:
Then obtain records through appropriate process rather than informal summaries.
Michael did not.
Why?
Too slow.
Too complicated.
Claire handed him:
three summaries.
He used them in mediation.
That was not Claire secretly manipulating him.
He participated.
Then the broad medical authorization.
Michael remembered the night clearly now.
Claire had said:
“Rachel makes everything difficult. Let me manage the medical side.”
Michael answered:
“Please.”
The word had been:
relief.
He was tired of:
forms,
messages,
arguments.
Claire was competent.
So he outsourced:
responsibility.
Later, when Rachel objected, Michael defended:
the system
because admitting the system was flawed meant:
work returned to him.
That was uncomfortable.
He had called himself:
caught between women.
Actually:
he benefited from Claire doing the labor and Rachel carrying the blame.
In counseling, Michael said:
“I wanted Claire to handle everything until I didn’t like how she handled it.”
Dr. Foster nodded.
“What should you have retained?”
“My role as Nora’s father.”
Not:
signature.
Role.
Reading consent forms.
Reviewing records.
Talking directly with Rachel.
Asking Nora neutral questions.
Knowing which clinician actually said what.
He had confused:
delegation
with:
abdication.
That was his part.
