Chapter 1 - The Day I Finally Saw It

I had never heard my daughter say she couldn’t breathe like that before.
My name is Gavin Mercer.
I was forty years old when I walked into the foyer of my own house and saw my eight-year-old daughter crawling across the marble floor toward the medicine that was supposed to be keeping her safe.
Nora was already crying when it began.
She stood beneath the crystal chandeliers in her lavender blouse and pleated skirt, holding the same small blue breathing-mask device against her face.
My wife, Serena, stood directly in front of her.
Serena was Nora’s stepmother.
For three years, I had believed the two of them simply had a difficult relationship.
Nora was sensitive.
Serena was strict.
That was how I explained it.
Then Serena reached forward and ripped the blue breathing device directly away from Nora’s face.
“STOP FAKING IT. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR DRAMA.”
She threw it across the cream marble.
The device skidded several feet away.
Nora dropped onto her hands and knees.
She started crawling toward it.
Desperate.
Crying.
Reaching.
As her fingers came close, Serena stepped forward.
One kick.
Hard.
The same blue device shot farther across the marble, completely out of Nora’s reach.
Nora kept crawling.
“I… I can’t breathe…”
No second kick.
That was when I appeared at the far end of the foyer.
For one second, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Then I saw the mask.
My daughter on the floor.
Serena standing behind her.
And every part of me moved before my brain caught up.
“Nora!”
I ran.
Dropped to my knees beside her.
Reached the same blue breathing device.
Brought it back.
Placed it securely against her face.
“Here. Breathe, sweetheart. Slow.”
Nora grabbed it with both hands.
I stayed beside her until her breathing began to settle.
Then I stood.
Turned toward Serena.
Walked straight to her.
And slapped her.
Once.
Fast.
Hard.
Her head snapped sideways.
“YOU TOOK HER MEDICINE AWAY?!”
Serena recoiled, one hand flying to her cheek.
I turned immediately back to Nora.
She reached for me.
I dropped down again.
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
I pulled her against my chest while she kept the blue device with her.
Her entire body shook.
I looked over her shoulder at Serena.
Something in her face had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
Fear had replaced it.
I held Nora tighter.
“HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING THIS TO MY DAUGHTER?!”
Serena froze.
She didn’t answer.
Nora clung harder around my neck.
And in that silence, I understood something that terrified me more than the scene I had just witnessed.
This was not Serena losing her temper for the first time.
May you like
She was afraid because I had finally seen something she thought Nora would never be able to prove.
