Chapter 11 - Serena’s Apology Was Still About Serena
Serena wrote Nora a letter.
It began:
I’m sorry that my attempts to help you become more independent frightened you.
I stopped reading.
There was no reason to continue.
Not because she used complicated words.
Because she still framed cruelty as assistance.
Her second letter improved slightly.
I should not have taken away your breathing device.
Better.
Then:
I was overwhelmed by the responsibility of managing your anxiety.
Again.
Her burden.
Her interpretation.
Her experience.
I did not give either letter to Nora.
Serena accused me of blocking reconciliation.
I told her:
“You are free to apologize honestly. Nora is free not to receive it.”
She said:
“You’re turning her against me.”
That accusation confirmed how little she had learned.
Nora’s distance did not need to be manufactured.
