Chapter 7 - The Necklace Was Never Just Jewelry to Lily

Anna wore the necklace every:
day.
Silver oval pendant.
Tiny engraving on the back:
L + M
Lily and Mark.
Anna ordered it after Lily’s first major surgery.
At first I thought the letters meant:
Lily and Mom.
Anna laughed.
“No. Lily and Mark. You two are stuck with each other when I’m gone.”
I hated when she talked like:
that.
Then she died.
Afterward I locked the necklace in my desk for almost a:
year.
I told myself Lily was too young.
The truth was that seeing it hurt:
me.
One night Lily climbed into my bed.
“Can I have Mommy’s necklace?”
She was six.
I asked:
“Why?”
“Because it touched her.”
That answer ended the:
argument.
I had the chain shortened and gave it to:
her.
For years it represented something simple.
Contact.
Not magic.
Not ownership.
A piece of metal that had rested against the person Lily missed:
most.
Then Vanessa started talking about the necklace as a:
problem.
“She’ll lose it.”
“She’ll break it.”
“It’s not age-appropriate.”
Then:
“It’s unhealthy.”
The more Lily defended it, the more Vanessa wanted it:
gone.
I never understood why.
Now I did.
The necklace was one part of Lily’s bond with Anna Vanessa could not:
edit.
She could move photographs.
Intercept cards.
Reframe stories.
Tell me the school had concerns.
But the necklace sat against Lily’s chest every day.
Then Vanessa opened it for repair and found the:
key.
Suddenly the necklace became more threatening.
It could lead Lily to the cedar box.
The cedar box contained letters written in Anna’s own:
voice.
No interpretation required.
That was why Vanessa took the key.
Then the tracker served two purposes.
It let her monitor Lily’s movements.
And it occupied the hidden compartment so that if Lily ever opened the pendant, she would find Vanessa’s device instead of Anna’s:
key.
That symbolism would have sounded too perfect if the serial records did not make the timeline:
real.
Then I found something in Vanessa’s online shopping account.
A new necklace.
Gold.
More expensive.
Ordered three weeks before the backyard incident.
Engraving:
L + V
Lily and Vanessa.
The order had been canceled.
Why?
Lily told me.
“Vanessa showed it to me.”
“What did she say?”
“That if I gave her Mom’s necklace, I could have the new one.”
“What did you say?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“She said I was choosing a dead person over a living one.”
My stomach tightened.
Then the backyard incident made sense.
That morning Vanessa had brought the gold necklace out again.
Lily refused.
Vanessa demanded Anna’s necklace.
Lily said:
“You’re not my mom.”
The sentence hurt Vanessa.
Not because Lily intended cruelty.
Because it named the truth Vanessa had spent years trying to:
change.
Vanessa grabbed the chain.
Then I walked outside in time to see everything after that.
The tracking tag exposed the surveillance.
But the real conflict had started before the first beep.
Vanessa wanted Lily to prove love by surrendering:
May you like
Anna.
