Chapter 2 - Save the Footage

He helped her sit upright against the marble counter, then turned his head toward the fitting mirror.

Above it, the boutique security camera watched them all.

Adrian’s eyes returned to Vanessa.

His voice was quiet.

“I saw the shove. I saw the slap.”

Vanessa’s fake concern cracked.

Just a little.

Enough.

“Adrian, no. She lost her balance. I reached for her, and she—”

“Stop.”

The word landed harder than shouting would have.

Vanessa stopped.

Adrian stood and placed himself between his mother and the bride.

At the doorway, a security guard appeared in a black suit.

Caroline lowered her hand from her mouth and stepped forward, shaking but ready.

Vanessa’s face went pale beneath her bridal makeup.

Adrian lifted his phone.

“Save the footage,” he said. “The wedding is over.”

The gown room became so quiet that everyone heard Elena’s uneven breathing.

Vanessa stared at Adrian as if she had misheard him.

“The wedding is over?”

Adrian’s eyes stayed on her.

“Yes.”

Her mouth trembled.

Not with heartbreak.

With panic.

“You can’t do that.”

Caroline looked down at the floor.

The security guard took one step inside.

Adrian’s voice remained controlled.

“I can.”

Vanessa reached for the edge of her veil with trembling fingers, as if touching it could remind him what she was supposed to be.

A bride.

His bride.

The woman he had planned to marry in six days at St. Catherine’s Cathedral in front of four hundred guests, three media photographers, half the Mercer board, and every family powerful enough to mistake manners for morality.

“Adrian,” she whispered. “Please. I panicked. Your mother was pulling the train too roughly.”

Elena flinched.

Adrian saw it.

Again.

That tiny movement hurt him more than the slap.

Because it meant this was not the first cruelty Elena had swallowed.

Only the first one he had walked in on.

Caroline’s voice came softly from near the rack.

“She wasn’t pulling the train.”

Vanessa turned her head sharply.

Caroline swallowed.

Then continued.

“Mrs. Mercer was trying to lift the edge because Ms. Langford told her to get down and fix it.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You work here.”

Caroline’s face was pale, but her voice held.

“Yes. And there is a camera.”

The sentence turned the luxury suite into a courtroom.

Vanessa looked toward the mirror.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that beauty did not erase evidence.

Adrian looked at the security guard.

“Lock the room. Preserve the full recording from the moment we entered the boutique.”

The guard nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

May you like

Vanessa stepped toward Adrian.

“Don’t make this public.”
