Chapter 3 - The Emerald Box on the Table

Adrian looked at his mother’s cheek.

Then at the cane in her hand.

Then at the little emerald gift box sitting unopened on the velvet side table.

His expression changed at the sight of it.

Not softer.

Deeper.

He had brought that box for Elena.

A surprise.

Inside were the emerald earrings she had pawned twenty-one years earlier to pay his first semester at private school after his father left them with nothing but debt and a last name that no longer opened doors.

Elena had lied about the earrings for years.

She said she lost them.

Adrian found the pawn record after he became wealthy enough to buy back every sacrifice she had ever pretended was small.

Today, after the fitting, he planned to give them to her.

He planned to tell Vanessa the story.

He planned to say, “Everything I am began with what she gave up.”

Instead, Vanessa had made Elena kneel on marble and slapped her for touching a train.

Adrian picked up the emerald box.

Vanessa watched him, confused.

Elena’s eyes filled when she saw it.

“Adrian…”

He opened the box.

The emerald earrings glowed against black velvet.

Caroline covered her mouth again, this time for a different reason.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“She sold these when I was twelve.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“She sold them so I could stay in school after my father disappeared and left her with bills she never told me about.”

Elena shook her head weakly.

“You don’t have to—”

“I do.”

His voice was gentle to his mother.

Then cold again when he faced Vanessa.

“She cleaned offices at night. She hemmed uniforms until her fingers cramped. She walked in winter because she used bus money for my lunch account. And today you shoved her to the floor because your dress train wasn’t lifted fast enough.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

There it was.

The real woman beneath the veil.

“I’m sorry your mother had a difficult life,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean she belongs in the middle of my bridal fitting.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian went still.

Caroline looked horrified.

Even the security guard’s face changed.

Vanessa realized too late that she had spoken as herself.

No fake sweetness.

No concern.

No lie polished quickly enough.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Your bridal fitting?”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I have done everything expected of me. I smiled through your mother’s little comments. I let her come today even though she clearly doesn’t understand this world.”

Elena whispered, “I only wanted to help.”

Vanessa laughed once.

A small, cruel sound.

“That is the problem. Women like you always think helping means touching things you don’t belong near.”

Adrian’s hand closed around the phone.

Not violently.

But tightly enough that his knuckles paled.

He glanced at Caroline.

“Did you hear that?”

Caroline nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked at the security guard.

“Did you?”

“Yes, sir.”

Vanessa’s confidence flickered.

“What are you doing?”

Adrian tapped his phone.

The boutique manager answered on speaker.

“Mr. Mercer?”

“Preserve all security footage from the VIP suite. Cancel payment authorization for today. Send a copy of the incident file to my attorney and the police liaison.”

Vanessa gasped.

“Police?”

Adrian did not look away from her.

“You assaulted an elderly woman.”

May you like

“She is your mother.”

“That makes it worse.”
