Chapter 1 - THE SHOT BETWEEN THE TABLES

The first shot did not sound like a gunshot.
It sounded like a champagne cork snapping beneath the music.
Damon Cross had been seated at the best table in Aurelia, a luxury restaurant on the riverfront where politicians, surgeons, and men with hidden bodyguards pretended they came only for the food. Warm light floated above white tablecloths. Crystal glasses reflected gold. A pianist played near the bar while dinner guests spoke in careful voices.
Keisha Monroe was carrying a tray toward Damon when she saw the man between the tables.
Silas Reed wore a dark jacket and the expression of someone who had already measured every exit. His right hand rose from beneath the jacket. The suppressed handgun pointed directly at Damon.
Keisha did not think.
She dropped the tray and threw herself forward.
“Get down!”
Damon caught her before she struck the floor. Wine glasses shattered around them as guests froze, then ducked behind chairs. Keisha’s body went rigid in his arms. Her breath left in a small, broken sound.
Silas stepped through the wreckage without hurry.
“She wasn’t supposed to move.”
Damon looked down at Keisha. Her hand clutched his sleeve. Her face had gone pale, but her eyes remained open.
“Behind you...” she whispered.
Damon shifted her behind him and rose halfway, placing his body between her and the gun.
“Walk away.”
For one long second, neither man moved.
Damon had faced armed men before. He had watched fear betray them through blinking eyes, shallow breaths, and nervous fingers. Silas showed none of it. He was not afraid of Damon. That meant he believed someone more powerful stood behind him.
The restaurant fell silent except for Keisha’s breathing and the faint hiss of the kitchen doors swinging on their hinges.
Silas backed toward them.
Damon did not chase him. Every instinct told him the retreat was part of the plan.
The doors closed behind Silas.
Footsteps echoed beyond them, then disappeared.
Damon dropped beside Keisha.
“Stay with me.”
She reached weakly for his sleeve.
Security men entered from the private dining room, weapons drawn too late. Damon ordered one to call emergency services and another to seal every exit. Nobody was to touch the broken glass, the dropped tray, or the kitchen doors.
A young guest began recording with his phone.
Damon looked at him once.
The phone lowered.
Keisha’s eyes fluttered.
“Why?” Damon asked quietly. “Why did you move?”
Her lips parted, but no answer came.
Paramedics arrived within minutes. As they lifted her onto a stretcher, Damon noticed something beneath the white tablecloth near his chair: a small black envelope that had not been there when he sat down.
He picked it up with a napkin.
Inside was a photograph of Keisha standing outside her apartment two nights earlier.
On the back, someone had written three words:
SHE CHOSE WRONG.
Damon stared toward the kitchen doors.

The attack had not begun when Silas fired.
Someone had been watching Keisha long before she saved his life.
