Chapter 7 - PIER NINETEEN

Pier Nineteen had been abandoned since a warehouse fire ten years earlier.

Damon arrived carrying a document case. Inside were a replica of Keisha’s ring and forged trust papers bearing Claire’s signature.

Ward’s team watched from shipping containers half a mile away. Silas, now cooperating to reduce his sentence, studied the pier’s likely sniper positions from a surveillance van.

“You cannot trust him,” Ward told Damon.

“I do not.”

“Then why use him?”

“Because Lara does.”

The warehouse doors opened.

Marco sat beneath a single hanging light. His hands were bound. Lara Vale stood behind him in a dark tailored coat.

She was older than the photographs but carried the same composed elegance. Her eyes rested on Damon without warmth.

“You have Vincent’s posture,” she said.

“You have his stationery.”

“He gave me more than stationery.”

Lara had been Vincent’s strategist and secret partner. Together they built the Concord’s financial system. When Vincent began trusting Damon with operations, Lara feared the boy would dismantle what they created.

She staged her death and waited.

After Vincent died, she preserved the hidden payments through Allison, corrupted Nathan’s systems, and used Marco’s company as an unwitting doorway.

Marcus discovered the transfers.

Allison brought him to Lara, believing she was arranging federal protection. Instead, Lara ordered his death.

“You killed him because he understood numbers,” Damon said.

“I killed him because he mistook information for power.”

“And Keisha?”

“A waitress carrying a key she did not understand.”

Marco strained against the restraints.

“You used my name.”

“I gave you a purpose.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I placed you beside the only man capable of inheriting Vincent’s empire.”

Lara wanted Damon to rule the Concord. When he planned to leave criminal life, she decided Claire would be easier to control. Claire’s signature would transfer Damon’s legitimate companies into a trust tied to the Concord. Lara could then absorb the ports, security contracts, and political leverage.

Damon placed the case on a crate.

“Release Marco.”

Lara opened the case and examined the ring.

Her eyes narrowed.

“This is false.”

A rifle bolt clicked above them.

Silas’s voice came through Damon’s concealed earpiece.

“Sniper in the east rafters.”

Damon moved as the first shot struck the crate. Marco threw his chair sideways. Ward’s team entered from both doors.

Lara escaped through a floor hatch while her guards exchanged fire with police.

Damon freed Marco.

Beneath the hatch was a flooded service tunnel leading toward the river.

They found Lara’s boat drifting empty.

On the seat lay Claire’s photograph and a hotel key card.

Lara had never intended to trade Marco.

She had used the pier to pull protection away from Claire.

Damon called his sister.

No answer.

At her townhouse, the front door stood open.

A cup of tea remained warm on the table.

Claire was gone.
