Chapter 1 - The Dress Tore Before the Truth Arrived

The wedding dress tore before the bride understood why the woman was screaming.
Claire Monroe stood on the white bridal platform surrounded by mirrors, satin curtains, and bridesmaids holding pins and lace.
For one rare moment, she had been happy.
Not nervous.
Not guarded.
Happy.
Her white gown fit perfectly at the waist, the skirt falling in soft layers under the bright salon lights. Her bridesmaids were smiling. Her mother was gone, but Claire had imagined she could almost hear her laughing somewhere near the racks of dresses.
Then the fitting-room door burst open.
A pregnant woman stormed into the salon with red eyes, red lipstick, and fury shaking through her whole body.
Brooke Ellis.
Claire had seen her once before.
In a photo.
An old photo from Ethan’s college years.
Before Claire could speak, Brooke pointed straight at her.
“You’re not marrying him!”
She rushed forward, grabbed the front fabric of Claire’s dress, and ripped it hard across the bodice and skirt.
The sound of tearing lace cracked through the salon.
Claire gasped and clutched the torn dress against her chest.
Bridesmaids screamed.
One of them dropped her phone onto the floor.
Brooke stood inches from the platform, one hand near her pregnant belly, the torn fabric still in her fist.
“I’m carrying his baby!”

Claire stopped breathing.
The words did not land all at once.
They spread.
Slowly.
Poison through silk.
Ethan’s baby.
Brooke was carrying Ethan’s baby.
Claire’s eyes filled, but she did not cry yet.
She looked at Brooke’s stomach.
Then at the ruined dress in her own hands.
Then at the bridesmaids, whose faces had gone pale.
Before anyone could move, the outer salon door opened hard.
Thomas Monroe, Claire’s father, rushed in wearing a dark suit, one hand already inside his jacket.
He froze when he saw his daughter clutching the destroyed wedding dress.
Something in his face changed.
Not shock.
Not confusion.
Rage.
He crossed the salon in three strides.
Brooke turned toward him just as he reached her.
The slap cracked across her face.
One hard open-hand strike.
Brooke’s head turned sharply, red lipstick smearing near the corner of her mouth as she stumbled backward into a padded salon chair.
The room fell into stunned silence.
Thomas stepped between Brooke and Claire.
Then he pulled a sealed envelope from inside his jacket.
His voice was cold enough to freeze the room.
“Say that again while I’m holding the DNA test.”
Brooke’s confidence collapsed.
She touched her mouth with trembling fingers.
Her eyes dropped to the envelope.
Thomas opened it slightly and pulled out the papers.
Brooke saw her name.
Her face went white.
Claire stood on the platform, clutching the torn dress, devastated but suddenly listening.
Thomas stared at Brooke.
“Then explain why this says he is not the father.”
No one spoke.
May you like
Because the truth had just entered the room wearing a seal from a laboratory.
And Brooke, who had come to destroy a bride, looked like she had finally realized she was the one being exposed.
