Chapter 2 - Thomas Monroe Investigated Before the Lie Could Win

Claire had met Ethan Hale two years earlier at a hospital charity dinner.

He was not the loudest man in the room.

That was why she noticed him.

He was handsome, yes, but not showy. Dark hair, calm voice, careful manners. He listened more than he spoke. When a waiter dropped a tray near their table, Ethan knelt to help collect the silverware before anyone else moved.

Claire remembered thinking, My mother would have liked him.

That mattered.

Claire’s mother had died when Claire was nineteen, leaving Thomas Monroe to raise his only daughter with too much money, too much fear, and not enough practice being soft.

Thomas was a powerful real estate developer in Boston.

People called him ruthless.

Claire knew better.

He was tender in private and terrifying in public because life had taught him that kindness without armor gets used by cruel people.

When Claire told him she loved Ethan, Thomas did not celebrate immediately.

He investigated.

That was his love language.

Ethan passed every quiet test.

No hidden debts.

No criminal history.

No angry exes with restraining orders.

No gambling.

No strange business failures.

Only one past relationship that ended badly during college.

Brooke Ellis.

Ethan had told Claire about her himself.

“She was part of my life before I knew who I was,” he said. “We were young. It became toxic. I left.”

“Does she still contact you?”

“No.”

He paused.

“She tried once. I didn’t answer.”

Claire appreciated the honesty.

Thomas did not appreciate the looseness of the word tried.

“What did she want?” he asked later.

Claire sighed.

“Dad.”

“What did she want?”

“She said she needed money.”

Thomas’s eyes sharpened.

“And Ethan?”

“He sent her a message through his attorney telling her not to contact him again.”

Thomas nodded once.

That should have been the end.

It was not.

Three weeks before the wedding, Claire received an anonymous email.

No subject.

One line.

Ask Ethan why Brooke is pregnant.

Claire stared at it for a long time.

Then deleted it.

Not because she was foolish.

Because she trusted Ethan enough to ask him face-to-face.

That night, she showed him the email.

His face went pale, but not guilty.

Afraid.

“I haven’t seen her in years.”

Claire watched his eyes.

She believed him.

Then he said, “But she sent me messages last month. I didn’t want to upset you.”

That hurt.

Not because of Brooke.

Because secrets grow teeth even when they are meant to protect.

Ethan showed her everything.

Brooke’s messages.

Photos of pregnancy tests.

Claims that he “owed” her.

Threats to ruin the wedding.

Demands for five million dollars in exchange for silence.

Claire sat beside him on the couch, reading every word.

Her stomach turned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Because I thought I could handle it quietly.”

“That’s not a marriage.”

“I know.”

He looked at her then, ashamed.

“I was scared you’d doubt me.”

Claire wanted to say she never would.

But love is honest or it is decoration.

“I might have,” she said. “For a second.”

He nodded like he deserved that.

Thomas was told the next morning.

He did not yell.

That was worse.

He only said, “Give me the messages.”

Ethan handed them over.

Thomas read them twice.

Then called his attorney, his private investigator, and a medical legal consultant before lunch.

Within a week, the truth began to appear.

Brooke was pregnant.

That part was real.

The child was not Ethan’s.

That part was already supported by dates, travel records, and a prenatal paternity test Brooke had taken quietly months earlier while trying to pressure another man.

A nightclub investor named Carter Voss.

Carter was married.

Carter was dangerous.

And Carter had no intention of paying her.

So Brooke found a better target.

Ethan Hale.

Soon-to-be husband of Claire Monroe.

Future son-in-law of Thomas Monroe.

A man with reputation, money, and a wedding large enough to ruin.

Thomas’s investigator obtained the lab trail legally through court-backed discovery after Brooke’s blackmail messages crossed into criminal extortion.

The prenatal DNA results were sealed.

Thomas planned to confront Brooke privately before the wedding.

But Brooke moved first.

She found out Claire would be at the bridal salon for the final fitting.

She knew exactly where cameras would be.

Exactly where bridesmaids would stand.

Exactly how to make a woman’s happiest moment become a public wound.

She came not to reveal truth.

She came to stage a lie.
