Chapter 5 - VANESSA'S BARGAIN

Vanessa left the library without permission.
Henry followed and found her in the powder room, speaking urgently into a phone.
She ended the call before he entered.
The number belonged to an attorney representing Northvale Development, the hidden buyer in Caleb’s land deal.
Vanessa had been negotiating separately.
She planned to transfer the nursery wing and surrounding acreage into a trust for her unborn child before the court could freeze the estate.
When confronted, she blamed Caleb.
“He told me the house was already his.”
“You helped him forge medical statements,” Evelyn replied.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed. “I protected my baby.”
“You protected wealth.”
“You think those are different because you never had to choose.”
Evelyn looked at Caleb.
“I chose every day after his father died.”
Caleb’s expression shifted, but he said nothing.
Vanessa revealed that Caleb had lied to her too. He claimed Evelyn was terminally ill and planned to leave the company to charity. He said the forged transfer merely accelerated what the family needed.
Then Vanessa learned about missing funds.
She began keeping copies of Caleb’s records.
“What do you want?” Henry asked.
“Immunity.”
“You are not in a position to demand it.”
Vanessa rested a hand on her stomach.
“I can give you the account where Caleb moved the development payment.”
Caleb stood.
“Don’t.”
Vanessa looked at him with open contempt. “You were going to leave me with nothing.”
He denied it.
She described a conversation she overheard between Caleb and a private doctor. They discussed declaring Evelyn mentally incompetent permanently.
The doctor had prepared a report without examining her.
Caleb planned to place Evelyn under guardianship, then sell the cottage and move her to a private care facility in another state.
Evelyn felt the betrayal physically, like cold water inside her chest.
Caleb stepped toward her.
“Mother, listen—”
“Do not call me that while asking strangers to erase my mind.”
For the first time that day, he looked ashamed.
But shame did not make him honest.
Vanessa gave Henry the account number.
The funds had been moved through four companies and finally placed in an offshore trust.
The trustee was not Caleb.
It was Vanessa.
She had not merely protected herself after discovering his plan.
She had helped create it.
Their marriage was not a partnership. It was a competition between two people using an unborn child as justification.
Rosa stood beside Evelyn.
“What happens to the baby?” she asked quietly.
Evelyn looked at Vanessa’s stomach.
“The baby has done nothing wrong.”
That answer broke something in Vanessa’s face.
She had expected hatred because hatred would make her own choices easier to defend.
Instead, Evelyn asked Arthur to ensure the child’s medical and educational needs would be protected regardless of the investigation.
Caleb stared at her.
“You would still help them?”
“I am not helping you,” Evelyn said. “I am refusing to become you.”
Outside, the rain began to weaken.
At the edge of the driveway, another vehicle arrived.
A woman stepped out carrying a worn blue suitcase.
She was in her late forties and had Rosa’s eyes.
Henry checked the name provided by the investigator.
Anna Hale.

Rosa’s birth mother.
The woman everyone believed had died when Rosa was an infant.
