Chapter 8 - CALEB'S CHOICE

Police officers entered Whitmore House shortly after noon.

Martin was arrested for fraud, conspiracy, bribery, and elder exploitation.

Caleb and Vanessa were informed that charges would follow after the financial review.

Caleb asked to speak with Evelyn alone.

Henry refused until Evelyn agreed to have the door remain open.

They sat in the conservatory where Theodore once grew white orchids.

Caleb looked smaller without his certainty.

“I didn’t know Martin planned all of it.”

“You knew enough.”

“I thought you were giving everything away.”

“To whom?”

“Charities. Rosa. People who weren’t family.”

Evelyn studied him.

“Rosa is family.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You treated her as less before you knew.”

He looked away.

Caleb said Martin spent years telling him Theodore never trusted him. Every failed promotion, every delayed inheritance, every question from Evelyn became proof.

When Evelyn’s health declined after surgery, Martin suggested Caleb needed legal authority before outsiders took advantage.

Caleb accepted because the lie matched what he already wanted to believe.

“Did you forge my signature?” Evelyn asked.

He was silent.

“Caleb.”

“Yes.”

“Did you plan to have me declared incompetent?”

His eyes filled, but he nodded.

“Would you have sent me away?”

“I told myself it would be temporary.”

“You told yourself many things.”

He began to cry.

Evelyn remembered the little boy who carried peaches in his shirt because his hands were too small. She remembered sitting beside him during fevers and teaching him to drive on the estate road.

Love did not vanish when someone became cruel.

That was what made cruelty inside a family so painful.

Caleb asked for forgiveness.

Evelyn said she did not know whether she could forgive him.

He asked whether she still loved him.

“Yes,” she answered. “But love is not permission.”

Police took Caleb’s statement.

He agreed to surrender account access and cooperate against Martin.

Vanessa refused cooperation until her attorney arrived.

Before leaving, Caleb stopped near Rosa.

He struggled to speak.

“I’m sorry.”

Rosa looked at him.

“For the threat? The work? The way you spoke to me? Or because I own something now?”

“All of it.”

“You don’t know all of it yet.”

He accepted that.

At the front door, one peach remained beneath the marble column. Its skin was split from the fall.

Caleb picked it up.

For a moment, Evelyn thought he might hand it to her.

Instead, he placed it on the entrance table and walked outside to the waiting police car.

No handcuffs had been used yet.

No reporters were present.

The scene was quieter than the morning.

May you like

But the silence did not protect him.

The untouched camera watched him leave the property he had claimed as his own.
