Chapter 3 - The Crescent Mark

The heavy, suffocating silence in the grand restaurant was absolutely deafening.

Baby Leo’s frantic thrashing completely ceased. He let out a soft, contented sigh, his small hands relaxing as he looked up at Sophie with wide, innocent eyes. The magical, instantaneous connection between the infant and the waitress was impossible to ignore.

Dominic was utterly paralyzed. He had hired dozens of elite pediatricians and luxury nannies, but none of them could calm his son like this.

But Sophie wasn't smiling. A tight close-up captured all the color violently draining from her beautiful face.

Her hand was still resting on Leo’s chest, gently brushing against the collar of his expensive blue and white outfit. She noticed a severe, angry red rash forming on the baby's delicate skin, directly caused by the synthetic, harsh fabric of the designer clothing. But that wasn't what made her heart completely stop beating in her chest.

Right below the collarbone, perfectly visible on the baby's pale skin, was a distinct, tiny crescent-moon birthmark.

Sophie physically staggered backward, her hands flying to her mouth in pure, apocalyptic horror.

To understand the absolute, unhinged trauma tearing through Sophie’s mind, one had to know her devastating past. Exactly eight months ago, Sophie had given birth to a baby boy in a private clinic. The doctors had tragically informed her that her son had died shortly after delivery. She had never even been allowed to hold him. But she had seen him for exactly three seconds.

She had seen that exact, perfectly shaped crescent birthmark.
