Chapter 4 - In Front of Them

Rosa had seen pieces earlier than he had.
Vanessa counting cameras with her eyes.
Vanessa asking which staff had keys.
Vanessa asking Mrs. Caldwell whether security footage kept “every boring hallway forever.”
Vanessa asking Rosa whether Marcus “really trusted household employees with sensitive things.”
Rosa had said, “Mr. Caldwell trusts Mrs. Caldwell.”
Vanessa’s smile had thinned.
“Funny. I thought that was his mother’s name.”
“It is,” Rosa said. “And hers too. She married into the service of this house before you were born.”
Vanessa never forgave that.
The burned blazer was not about a blazer.
It was the first strike in a larger cleaning-out.
Rosa understood that now.
So did Marcus.
He turned toward the security chief.
“Show the earlier hallway footage.”
Vanessa’s face went white.
“What earlier footage?”
Marcus did not look at her.
The security chief tapped the tablet again.
This clip was from the marble service hallway the previous evening.
Vanessa stood near the laundry-room entrance on her phone.
Her voice was low, but clear.
“Once Marcus signs after the wedding, the staff goes first. The old woman knows too much, and the maid keeps watching everything. No, I can handle Marcus. He hates confrontation. He’ll believe it if I make them look careless.”
The tablet stopped.
Mrs. Caldwell’s face had gone pale.
Rosa’s stomach tightened.
Marcus stared at the screen, then at Vanessa.
For the first time, he looked personally wounded.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry about being deceived.
Wounded.
“My mother trusted this staff,” he said.
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“Your mother is dead.”
The room seemed to lose oxygen.
Mrs. Caldwell made a small sound.
Marcus went completely still.
Vanessa realized too late that she had stepped into a sacred place and spat on the floor.
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“Yes. And somehow she still sees people more clearly than I did.”
Vanessa’s confidence shattered.
“Marcus, I was angry. I made a mistake. She provoked me.”
Rosa looked up.
“I did not speak before you hit me.”
Vanessa turned on her.
“You’re the help. You don’t talk to me like—”
Marcus cut in.
“Stop.”
One word.
No shouting.
No drama.
But Vanessa stopped.
The mansion seemed built for that voice.
Marcus looked at Rosa.
“Did she hurt you?”
Rosa touched her cheek.
“I’m fine.”
Mrs. Caldwell stepped forward.
“No, she is not.”
Rosa looked at her.
The older woman’s eyes were wet.
“She was assaulted while protecting her child,” Mrs. Caldwell said. “That is not fine.”
Lily whimpered.
Rosa gathered her close.
Marcus looked at the security chief.
“Call Dr. Patel for Rosa. Then call the attorney.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Attorney? Marcus, don’t be ridiculous.”
He finally faced her fully.
“You struck an employee in my home, framed a child, and described a plan to remove staff after gaining influence over this household.”
Her lips parted.
“I’m your fiancée.”
“No,” Marcus said. “You were.”
The word landed softly.
That made it worse.
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Don’t do this in front of them.”
Marcus looked at Rosa kneeling on the floor with Lily shaking in her arms.
“In front of them is where you did it.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You’re choosing a maid over me?”
May you like
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“I’m choosing the truth over a woman who would terrorize a three-year-old to win an argument.”
