Chapter 7 - The Dramatic Version

One evening, after the summer heat finally broke, Rosa found Lily in the laundry room doorway.
The child stood holding Mr. Buttons, looking at the ironing board.
Rosa knelt.
“You okay?”
Lily nodded.
“Can I come in?”
Rosa’s chest tightened.
“Yes.”
Lily stepped inside slowly.
She pointed at the unplugged iron.
“Cold?”
Rosa touched it first, then guided Lily’s hand near it without contact.
“Cold.”
“Camera?”
Rosa pointed above the doorway.
“Still there.”
Lily nodded solemnly.
Then walked to the towel shelf and placed Mr. Buttons on top of a folded stack.
“He watches too.”
Rosa smiled.
“Good. We need good witnesses.”
Lily grinned.
The laundry room became just a room again after that.
Not all at once.
But enough.
Years later, people still told the dramatic version.
The luxury mansion laundry room.
The folded towels.
The unplugged iron.
The burned cream blazer.
Vanessa storming in and pointing at a three-year-old girl.
Your child burned my suit!
Rosa stepping in front of Lily.
The raised hand.
The single slap.
Rosa’s head turning, but her body staying between Vanessa and the child.
Don’t touch my daughter.
Vanessa shaking the blazer.
Then prove she didn’t do it.
Rosa looking up at the camera.
Check the camera.
Marcus entering from the marble service hallway.
Play everything.
The security chief turning the tablet.
Vanessa herself pressing the blazer under the hot iron.
She burned it herself.
