Chapter 3 - THE SECOND CHILD IN THE HALLWAY
Elena reached St. Anne's in twelve minutes. Sophie lay beneath a white blanket with her left arm wrapped in a temporary cast. Her face was pale, but her eyes sharpened when her mother entered.
Elena kissed her forehead. "I'm here."
Sophie tried to smile. "Did they believe you?"
The question struck Elena harder than any insult in the principal's office. Children should not have to wonder whether adults would believe their pain.
"They do now," she said.
Detective Lena Ortiz waited near the window. Because Elena's position created an obvious conflict, the district attorney had assigned Ortiz and a special prosecutor to the case. Elena would be treated as a witness and parent, not as the judge.
Sophie described the incident slowly. Max had demanded her science notebook because his project had failed. When she refused, he threatened to have her mother fired. Then another student, Caleb Warren, stood at the bottom of the stairs and filmed the confrontation on Max's phone.
"He kept saying, 'Do it again,'" Sophie whispered. "After I fell, Caleb picked up the notebook. Max told him to tear out my experiment pages."
Elena held Sophie's good hand. "Why didn't you tell the school nurse?"
"Principal Keller came before the ambulance. She said if I blamed Max, the school might say I started it."
Ortiz's expression hardened.
The video from the hallway camera had no audio. Caleb's recording could prove planning, encouragement, and the attempted destruction of Sophie's work. But Max's phone was missing when officers searched him.
Richard claimed it had been lost days earlier.
Sophie shook her head. "He had it after I fell."
At that moment, a nurse entered with an evidence envelope. A janitor had found a damaged smartphone inside a restroom trash tank at Oak Creek. The device had been wrapped in a plastic bag and submerged.
Richard's attorneys arrived at the hospital before technicians could even examine it.
By evening, the story had spread. Parents gathered outside Oak Creek demanding answers. Reporters discovered that seven bullying complaints involving Max had been reduced to "student disagreements." In three cases, the victims had transferred schools.
One mother, Dana Wells, told Ortiz that Max had broken her son's glasses and Richard later offered money for "inconvenience." Another father produced emails showing that Principal Keller had discouraged him from filing a police report.
Elena sat beside Sophie's bed as the pattern emerged. This was larger than one shove. Richard had created a private system of immunity around his son, and the school had accepted it.
Late that night, Richard appeared on local television outside his lawyer's office. He called the investigation a political attack led by "an ambitious judge exploiting her injured daughter."
Sophie watched from the hospital bed. "Is he going to win?"
Elena switched off the television.
"Not if we tell the truth and keep telling it."
Her phone buzzed. The forensic lab had recovered part of the deleted recording from Max's phone.
In the video, Max shoved Sophie. Caleb laughed. Then Richard's voice came through the phone speaker. He had been connected by video call.
"Don't let a poor little nobody embarrass you," Richard said. "Show her who runs that school."
The recording ended with Sophie's scream.
Elena stared at the transcript until the words blurred.
