Chapter 7 - THE COURTROOM HE COULD NOT PURCHASE
The bribery discovery transferred Richard's case to federal court. Elena's title no longer mattered to the defense's preferred narrative. The evidence now included bank transfers, encrypted messages, and testimony from a former Sterling accountant who had spent years disguising payments.
Richard entered the courtroom each morning in tailored suits, but the performance no longer worked. Reporters stopped describing him as a billionaire and began calling him the defendant.
Elena testified for two hours. She described the meeting, the shove, the check, and Max's confession. Richard's attorney tried to provoke her.
"You enjoyed revealing your badge, didn't you?"
"No. I enjoyed nothing about learning that my daughter was attacked and adults conspired to hide it."
"You wanted to humiliate Mr. Sterling."
"He humiliated himself."
The courtroom went still.
On cross-examination, the lawyer suggested Elena had staged the meeting to create a dramatic arrest. She calmly explained the timeline, the prior complaints, the judicial authorization, and the safeguards used to avoid conflict.
Then the prosecutor played the office audio.
Max's voice filled the courtroom: "Yeah... and I'd do it again."
Richard's laughter followed.
Several jurors looked away from him.
The defense's strongest moment came when they called a school consultant who claimed Richard's donations had improved hundreds of children's lives. The prosecutor did not dispute it.
"A person can fund a library and still commit a crime," she said. "Generosity does not purchase immunity."
Principal Keller testified about the deleted video and her abduction. Vale confirmed every order. The accountant explained the bribery system.
Finally, the jury watched Richard's video call with Max.
"Show her who runs that school."
Sophie was not in the courtroom. Elena had promised she would not turn her daughter's recovery into public evidence unless absolutely necessary. The prosecution used medical records and video instead.
After four weeks, closing arguments began.
Richard's lawyer asked jurors to separate harsh parenting from criminal conduct.
The prosecutor agreed—and then demonstrated that the case was not about harsh words. It was about encouraging assault, destroying evidence, kidnapping a witness, bribing officials, and creating a system designed to make frightened families disappear.
The jury deliberated for nine hours.
Richard stood as the foreperson returned.
Guilty on obstruction.
Guilty on witness tampering.
Guilty on conspiracy.
Guilty on unlawful imprisonment.
Guilty on federal bribery charges.
With each count, his shoulders lowered.
When the final verdict was read, he turned toward Elena. For one second, anger burned in his face. Then it gave way to something she had never seen in him before.
