Chapter 4 - THE LIE EMILY LEFT BEHIND

James had spent four years believing his wife died in a highway accident.

The file beneath Sarah's photograph told a different story.

Emily Carter had not simply lost control of her car on an icy bridge. According to handwritten notes hidden in the pump house, she had been gathering information about missing children connected to a private foster agency called Haven House.

Emily had worked as a school counselor. Three weeks before her death, she told a colleague that several children described being transported at night in county vehicles. One child named a deputy. Another mentioned a large house outside town where cameras watched every room.

The official investigation classified the statements as fantasy.

Daniel signed the report.

James read the page twice.

"He investigated Emily's death," he said.

Chris remained silent.

"My own brother stood beside me at her funeral."

"We don't know he killed her."

"He buried what she found."

A sound came from the main chamber.

Both men drew their weapons.

Deputy Mark Ellis stood in the doorway with rain dripping from his uniform. His pistol remained holstered, but one hand was raised.

"You need to leave," he said.

James stepped toward him. "Were you here when Sarah was tied to that chair?"

Pain flashed across Ellis's face. "Yes."

James struck him before Chris could intervene.

Ellis hit the wall and slid to one knee. James grabbed his collar.

"Why didn't you protect her?"

"I tried."

"You left her bleeding."

"I drew them away. Chris found her because I sent the message."

Chris watched him carefully. "Who is them?"

Ellis looked toward the broken windows.

"Daniel is not the man running this."

James tightened his grip. "Say the name."

"Judge Malcolm Reed."

The county's senior judge had presided over adoptions, sealed juvenile records, and approved nearly every foster placement in Briar County for twenty years. He was also Daniel's father-in-law.

Ellis explained that Haven House used vulnerable children as leverage against wealthy or politically connected adults. Some were placed illegally. Some disappeared into private networks. Daniel protected the operation by destroying reports and intimidating witnesses.

Emily discovered the pattern.

Sarah found one of her mother's hidden notebooks three nights earlier.

She called Daniel because she trusted him.

Daniel took her to the pump house.

James could barely speak. "He delivered her to them."

Ellis shook his head. "He said he was taking her somewhere safe. I followed because I didn't believe him. Reed was already there. They argued. Daniel wanted the notebook. Reed wanted Sarah silenced."

"Who cut her?"

"Reed's security man. Sarah fought him. Daniel froze."

James released Ellis.

"Where is Daniel now?"

"Looking for the notebook."

Chris lifted Sarah's school photograph. "Where would she hide something her mother left her?"

James knew immediately.

Emily had built Sarah a wooden dollhouse for her fifth birthday. It sat in Sarah's bedroom, untouched because she said moving the furniture would change the stories inside.

They raced back toward the hospital, but James's phone rang halfway there.

The nurse caring for Sarah was crying.

Someone wearing surgical scrubs had entered Sarah's room during a power flicker.

Sarah was gone.
