Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR BEHIND THE DOOR

Dr. Warren Hale had delivered Sarah eight years earlier.
He had comforted James after Emily's death. He had approved her autopsy report. He had personally explained that internal injuries from the crash killed her instantly.
Now he held a knife against Sarah's throat.
"Drop your weapons," Hale said.
Chris lowered his pistol first. Ellis followed.
James remained on his knees beside the overturned chair.
"She needs surgery," he said. "You know that."
"Then stop making me waste time."
Reed stood, wiping blood from his mouth. The notebook remained in his hand.
"Hale, take the children through the tunnel."
Daniel looked toward the rear wall. "What tunnel?"
Reed ignored him.
Hale cut Sarah's restraints but kept one arm locked around her chest. She could barely stand.
James saw her eyes move toward the floor.
A shard of broken glass lay beside her foot.
He gave the smallest possible shake of his head.
Do not fight.
Sarah looked at him.
Then she stepped down hard on Hale's shoe and threw her weight sideways.
The knife moved away from her throat for one second.
James crossed the distance and struck Hale's arm. Chris recovered his pistol. Ellis tackled Reed.
Hale slashed James across the shoulder and ran through a hidden door behind the peeling mural.
Sarah collapsed.
James caught her.
"Daddy, the nurse," she whispered.
"What nurse?"
"The blue nurse helped them."
The young ER nurse had not simply been fooled by a fake badge. She was Hale's daughter, part of the plan.
Chris radioed the warning, but no one answered at the hospital.
Hale had used his access to remove Sarah, erase footage, and delay treatment. His daughter had kept James focused on the obvious intruder.
Ellis handcuffed Reed to a radiator. Daniel untied Luke.
"There is a medical room downstairs," Daniel said. "Reed brought children here for examinations before moving them."
James lifted Sarah.
They descended a narrow stairway into a basement corridor lined with locked doors. Old hospital beds stood beneath sheets. Cabinets contained sedatives, forged birth certificates, and boxes labeled with children's names.
In the final room, Chris found a tunnel leading toward the lake.
Hale's footprints marked the mud.
Sarah was fading.
James placed her on a metal table while Chris opened medical cabinets.
"We need an ambulance," James said.
"Road is blocked," Ellis replied. "Reed's men dropped trees behind us."
Daniel stared at the lake tunnel. "There is a boathouse. Reed keeps a helicopter across the water."
Luke gripped his father's sleeve. "Grandpa said they were leaving tonight."
Reed had planned to move records and witnesses before dawn.
James wrapped Sarah in a clean blanket.
"Then we use his helicopter."
Chris led them through the tunnel. Halfway to the lake, shots struck the stone behind them.
Hale had not fled.
He had circled back with two armed men.
Daniel pushed Luke ahead and fired a pistol taken from the security guard.
One attacker fell. The second retreated.
Hale shouted through the darkness.
"James, your wife begged me to save her."
James stopped.
"She survived the crash," Hale continued. "For almost an hour."
The tunnel seemed to close around him.
"You killed her," James said.
"I followed orders. Just as Daniel did."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
May you like
Hale fired again.
The bullet struck Daniel in the chest.
