Chapter 3 - THE FILE CALLED TRANSITION

The Whitaker home overlooked the Chesapeake Bay.

Andrew called it his house.

The deed belonged to Olivia and the Hale family trust.

By evening, a court issued an emergency protective order barring Andrew from the property.

A locksmith changed every exterior lock.

Ethan watched from the staircase.

“Is Dad dangerous?”

Olivia wanted to say no.

She wanted to preserve one final harmless version of him.

Instead she said, “He made dangerous choices.”

“Will he come here?”

“Not tonight.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

That night Ethan slept beside her.

At 1:17 a.m., he woke from a nightmare and asked why his father had invited them to breakfast.

Olivia held him until his breathing slowed.

She had no answer a child should carry.

The next morning, attorney Rachel Monroe arrived with the first evidence packet.

Andrew’s TRANSITION file contained more than divorce papers.

There were photographs of Olivia taken outside her office, at Ethan’s school, and entering a therapist’s building after her mother died.

A private investigator had followed her for five months.

Andrew had kept notes.

Olivia cries easily when confronted.

Olivia becomes irrational when Ethan is threatened.

Olivia relies on Marcus for financial decisions.

Olivia has no independent credibility within military community.

Rachel turned the page.

There were staged scenarios.

Cancel Ethan’s pickup and document panic.

Delay household deposit and record accusations.

Mention boarding school to trigger emotional response.

Expose Serena at gate if needed.

Olivia stopped reading.

“He tested me.”

Rachel nodded.

“Repeatedly.”

Arguments Olivia had believed were marital stress had been experiments.

Andrew had created fear, then documented her reaction.

He had been manufacturing a personality for court.

The cruelest file was a video folder.

One clip showed Olivia crying in the kitchen after Andrew told her Ethan might be sent to a military boarding school.

Another showed her raising her voice when Andrew disappeared with Ethan for six hours and refused to answer his phone.

The recordings began after the provocation.

Never before.

Cause removed.

Reaction preserved.

“He was building a monster out of my fear,” Olivia said.

Rachel closed the laptop.

“He was building a witness the court would distrust.”

Marcus arrived after lunch.

Olivia met him in the library.

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle anymore.”

“I know.”

“Every file comes to Rachel. Every payment. Every message. No summaries.”

Marcus nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry isn’t information.”

He placed a drive on the desk.

The audit revealed shell companies, inflated invoices, and two emergency fuel vendors that did not exist.

Money moved from federal contracts into overseas accounts.

Then some of it returned.

A shell company paid Andrew’s personal debt.

Another purchased a waterfront condominium in Serena’s name.

A third transferred two hundred thousand dollars to a company Olivia recognized.

Black Harbor Investigations.

The private investigator following her had been paid with stolen government funds.

Andrew had used public money to build a false case against his wife.

Marcus showed her one more transaction.

Forty-five thousand dollars to Northstar Behavioral Consulting.

“What is that?”

“A psychologist.”

Olivia’s stomach tightened.

She had met Dr. Evan Sloan once.

Andrew brought him to a military-family dinner and introduced him as a trauma specialist.

Three weeks later, Sloan wrote an unsigned assessment stating Olivia displayed signs of emotional instability and obsessive maternal attachment.

He had never evaluated her.

The document was saved in Andrew’s custody folder.

Rachel read it and became very still.

“This isn’t just fraud,” she said. “This is a coordinated attempt to falsify mental-health evidence.”

Before they could continue, Ethan called from upstairs.

Olivia found him sitting on his bedroom floor with Andrew’s old tablet.

The screen displayed a hidden cloud folder.

Ethan had guessed the password.

DADHERO88.

Inside were audio recordings.

One opened automatically.

Andrew’s voice filled the room.

“After the gate, Olivia won’t keep custody.”

Serena answered.

“What if she stays calm?”

“She won’t. Not with Ethan there.”

Ethan stared at the tablet.

Olivia crossed the room and shut it.

Too late.

He had heard enough.

“Dad wanted me there,” he whispered.

Olivia knelt.

“No. He wanted to use your presence. That is not the same as wanting you.”

Ethan’s lower lip trembled.

“Was I bait?”

Olivia’s heart broke at the word.

She pulled him against her.

“No. You were his mistake.”

The tablet chimed.

A new remote login appeared on the screen.

Someone was trying to erase the folder.

Rachel disconnected the Wi-Fi.

Marcus called Agent Reed.

Within minutes, investigators arrived and seized the device.

The login had originated from Serena’s apartment.

But Serena was already in federal custody.

Someone else was still helping Andrew.

And that person had access to evidence no one was supposed to know existed.
