Chapter 6 - THE BOY IN THE BOATHOUSE

The search began across three jurisdictions.

Traffic cameras captured a dark utility van leaving the hotel garage.

The plates belonged to a naval maintenance vehicle reported stolen the previous week.

GPS led agents toward an abandoned boathouse near Yorktown.

Olivia insisted on going.

Reed refused.

“You are the leverage. If the kidnappers see you, they control the scene.”

“He is my son.”

“And I intend to return him alive.”

Olivia remained inside the mobile command vehicle while tactical teams surrounded the property.

A storm rolled over the river.

Rain struck the windshield.

Inside the boathouse, Ethan sat tied to a chair beside Rear Admiral Mercer.

Mercer had removed his uniform jacket.

He looked less like a decorated officer and more like a tired man who had run out of rooms in which people still obeyed him.

“You lied,” Ethan said.

“About what?”

“You said Officer Harris sent you.”

Mercer looked toward the door.

“Sometimes adults lie to prevent worse things.”

“My dad says that.”

The comparison angered him.

“I am not your father.”

“You both hurt people and call it protection.”

Mercer stepped closer.

Ethan flinched but did not look away.

The boathouse door opened.

Andrew entered wearing civilian clothes.

He had escaped detention during a transfer arranged by a corrupt guard.

Ethan’s face changed.

“Dad?”

Andrew knelt in front of him.

“I’m getting you out of here.”

“Mom said you can’t see me.”

“Your mother doesn’t understand what Marcus has done.”

Andrew untied one wrist.

“Come with me. We’re leaving the country.”

Ethan pulled back.

“No.”

Andrew froze.

“I’m your father.”

“You threw Mom.”

“That was an accident.”

“You planned it.”

“Who told you that?”

“I heard you.”

Andrew looked at Mercer.

“You said the tablet was erased.”

Mercer’s eyes hardened.

“That was Sloan’s responsibility.”

Outside, Reed heard everything through a microphone hidden in the stolen van’s tracking unit.

Olivia heard too.

Every word.

Andrew continued.

“Ethan, listen to me. Your mother is being manipulated. She will lose everything when Hale Maritime is indicted.”

“Will Uncle Marcus go to jail?”

“He should.”

“And you?”

Andrew’s expression tightened.

“I made mistakes.”

“You stole money.”

“I served this country for twenty years.”

“That’s not an answer.”

For the first time, Andrew seemed to realize his son no longer admired the uniform enough to ignore the man inside it.

Mercer interrupted.

“We need to move.”

He lifted Ethan from the chair.

Tactical officers approached the rear entrance.

A floorboard creaked.

Mercer pulled a handgun.

Andrew grabbed Ethan and dragged him toward the dock.

“Stay back!” Mercer shouted.

Gunfire shattered a window.

Not from the officers.

From inside.

Serena stepped from behind a storage wall holding a pistol.

She had escaped federal transport with help from Mercer’s network.

She aimed at Mercer.

“You were going to leave me in prison.”

Mercer aimed back.

“You were supposed to disappear months ago.”

Andrew pulled Ethan behind a boat engine.

Three adults.

Three weapons.

Three versions of betrayal.

Olivia watched the live feed.

Reed ordered everyone to hold fire.

Serena shouted, “Andrew, tell him who has the archive.”

Andrew said nothing.

Mercer looked toward Ethan.

Then toward the river.

Understanding crossed his face.

“The boy?”

Serena smiled.

“Andrew hid the encryption key in his son’s school account.”

Ethan stared at his father.

“You used me again.”

Andrew reached for him.

Ethan kicked hard and broke free.

He ran toward the open side door.

Mercer grabbed him.

A shot exploded.

Mercer fell.

Officer Harris entered from the rear with the tactical team.

He pulled Ethan behind cover.

Andrew raised his weapon.

Harris aimed at him.

For one second, father and guard stood frozen.

Then Olivia’s voice came through the loudspeaker outside.

“Andrew, put it down.”

He turned toward the sound.

That was enough.

Harris struck the weapon from his hand.

Andrew was forced to the floor.

Serena tried to escape by boat.

Reed intercepted her at the dock.

Mercer survived the gunshot.

Ethan emerged into the rain and ran into Olivia’s arms.

He was shaking.

But alive.

He whispered one sentence against her shoulder.

“Dad didn’t come to save me.”

Olivia held him tighter.

“No.”

“What did he come for?”

May you like

She looked toward Andrew being placed in restraints.

“The last thing he thought he still controlled.”
