Chapter 1 - I’ve Seen That Mark Before

Dr. Samuel Hart had delivered more than three thousand babies in his career.
He had seen first breaths.
First cries.
Terrified mothers.
Fathers collapsing into chairs.
Grandmothers praying into their hands.
He had watched life enter bright hospital rooms in every possible way.
But when Claire Vale’s newborn son cried against his gloved hands, Samuel Hart stopped breathing.
The baby was minutes old.
Damp dark hair.
Tiny fists curled against his striped hospital blanket.
A furious, healthy cry filling the delivery room.
Claire lay exhausted on the bed in a blue-patterned gown, hair wet against her pale face, one trembling hand reaching for him.
“Please,” she whispered. “Give him to me.”
Samuel placed the baby carefully against her chest.
Claire pulled him close with instant, desperate protectiveness.
Then the blanket shifted.
Only one inch.
Enough.
Beneath the baby’s left collarbone, just above the soft rise of his chest, was a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark.
Samuel’s hands froze.
Claire looked at him.
“Doctor… what’s wrong with him?”
Samuel bent closer.
Slowly, carefully, he pulled the blanket down just enough to see the mark again.
The crescent was small.
Pale brown at the edge.
Curved exactly like a half-moon.
His eyes widened.
Then filled with tears so quickly that Nurse One’s relieved smile vanished behind him.
Samuel whispered, “This… this can’t be possible.”
Claire’s arms tightened around the baby.
She shifted away from him.
“What can’t be possible?”
Samuel lifted one trembling hand toward the mark, then stopped before touching the child.
He removed his glasses with one decisive motion and covered his mouth.
A sob escaped him anyway.
The nurses exchanged a frightened glance.
Claire’s relief turned into terror.
“Why are you looking at my son like that?”
Samuel gripped the bed rail to steady himself.
He looked from the birthmark to Claire’s face.
His expression was not medical anymore.
It was personal.
Broken.
Haunted.
“Who is this child’s father?”
Claire became completely still.
The heart monitor pulsed beside the bed.
The newborn’s crying softened against her chest.
Claire pressed him closer.
She did not answer.
Samuel looked down at the birthmark again.
His jaw trembled.
May you like
“I’ve seen that mark before.”
The delivery room went silent except for the monitor, the baby’s small cries, and Claire’s sudden, terrified breathing.
