Chapter 3 - No Documents Get Signed

The newborn shifted in Claire’s arms.

She had not chosen a name yet.

Ethan had wanted to wait until he held him.

Claire had spent months refusing to name the baby alone because naming him without Ethan felt like accepting he was not coming back.

Samuel looked toward the crescent mark.

“Every firstborn son in my family has it,” he said. “My father. Me. My son. Same place.”

Claire stared at him.

“My baby’s father was Ethan Vale.”

Samuel went still.

The name meant nothing to the nurses.

To Samuel, it landed like a key in a lock he had been standing beside for thirty-two years.

“Vale?”

Claire nodded.

“Ethan Vale. He was adopted. He found records before he disappeared. One of them said Baby Hart.”

Samuel’s hand gripped the bed rail so tightly his knuckles whitened.

Behind him, Nurse One whispered, “Doctor…”

Samuel stepped back.

He was still crying.

But now something else moved through his face.

Recognition becoming purpose.

“Claire,” he said carefully, “has Richard Vale contacted you about the baby?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“He’s been trying for months.”

“What does he want?”

“To ‘support the child.’ His lawyers sent papers. Temporary guardianship language. A trust agreement. Medical authorization forms.”

Samuel’s face hardened.

“Did you sign anything?”

“No.”

“Good.”

The word came out with such force that both nurses looked at him.

Claire’s fear sharpened.

“Doctor, what is happening?”

Samuel looked at the newborn again.

Then at Claire.

“I think your son may be my grandson.”

Claire pulled the baby closer.

Not because she rejected the idea.

Because the room had become too large, too fast.

Her body was exhausted.

Her heart was still waiting for Ethan.

And a doctor she had met only an hour earlier was looking at her child like a miracle wrapped in evidence.

“No,” she whispered.

Samuel’s face fell.

“I’m sorry.”

“No,” Claire said again, stronger this time. “You don’t get to say that unless you can help me find Ethan.”

Samuel stared at her.

Claire’s tears spilled now.

“Everyone keeps telling me he left. He didn’t. He was scared, but he didn’t leave me. He didn’t leave him.”

Samuel looked at the baby’s birthmark.

Then toward the closed delivery room door.

Then back at Claire.

His professional calm returned in pieces.

Not cold.

Controlled.

“Then we do this correctly.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means no one sees this child without your permission. No one from the Vale family enters this room. No documents get signed. No blood sample leaves without chain of custody. And I call the one attorney who believed me when no one else did.”

Claire looked down at her son.

May you like

The baby’s tiny fingers opened against her gown.

For the first time since Ethan disappeared, she felt the outline of a fight she might not have to survive alone.
