Chapter 5 - Listen to Atlas

That stopped him.
Elena had been with Dominic the night he was taken.
She told the story in a hospital conference room while Atlas sat against Elias’s leg.
Dominic had met her in a parking garage two blocks from the federal building.
He brought no files.
No laptop.
Only a sealed brass evidence capsule disguised as a memorial challenge coin.
Inside was a microdrive containing copies of Holloway’s private ledger, body-camera fragments, old evidence vault access logs, and audio of Holloway threatening an informant before the Brookline warehouse fire.
Before they could enter the federal building, two men intercepted them.
Not in uniform.
But trained.
Dominic fought.
Elena ran because Dominic shouted, “Go.”
She made it to the stairwell and hid behind a maintenance closet door while they dragged Dominic into a service van.
She heard Holloway’s voice on a phone speaker.
Not directly.
But enough.
“No body, no problem. Make him a hero by Friday.”
Elena fled with the capsule.
She did not call the department.
She called the one federal contact Dominic had trusted.
But that contact had been reassigned.
Or removed.
Or compromised.
By the time she got help, Dominic was already declared dead.
She stayed hidden until she saw the funeral stream.
Then Atlas lunged at the coffin.
Then she knew Dominic might still be alive.
Elias listened without blinking.
When she finished, he asked, “Where is the capsule?”
Elena placed the brass challenge coin on the table.
Atlas sniffed it once and looked away.
Dominic had trained him not to react to that object unless commanded.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Elias wanted to laugh and break something at the same time.
The evidence broke the case open.
Not immediately.
Corruption never collapses because one truth arrives.
It argues.
It delays.
It questions chain of custody.
It attacks the witness.
It calls the dog unreliable.
It calls the partner emotional.
It calls the woman unstable.
It calls the dying man confused.
Then the records arrived.
Holloway’s calls.
The false medical release.
The funeral home transfer logs.
The altered body identification form.
The security footage of a van arriving behind the church before dawn.
The private payment to an assistant medical examiner.
The missing evidence tags.
The Brookline fire report.
Dominic’s old notebook, found hidden behind the panel of Atlas’s kennel because of course Dominic had trusted the dog’s space more than the department’s filing cabinet.
On the first page, he had written:
IF YOU FOUND THIS, LISTEN TO ATLAS.
Elias read that line and sat down on the floor.
May you like
Atlas came to him and placed his head on Elias’s shoulder.
For the first time since the church, Elias cried without trying to stop.
