Senator William Vale arrived twenty minutes later in a black sedan escorted by state police.

He was eighty-one, silver-haired, and famous for speaking about duty while quietly building a family empire through public contracts. He entered the ballroom as though the helicopters, armed aides, and crying bride were inconveniences arranged by lesser people.

"General Rhodes," he said. "You are exceeding your authority."

Rhodes did not salute. "Senator."

William looked at Nathan's split lip. "Commander Hale has always been theatrical."

Nathan remembered him from decades earlier, when Vale served on a defense oversight committee. Falcon One had discovered missing weapons tied to a company that donated heavily to Vale's campaigns. The investigation collapsed after witnesses changed testimony and records disappeared.

Nathan had never proved William's involvement.

Until now.

The recording device captured William authorizing the daughter contingency. His attorneys would argue the phrase meant nothing criminal. Nathan knew they needed more.

Emily stepped forward. "What was the contingency?"

William studied her without affection. "A misunderstanding created by frightened employees."

"Did you order them to frame me for stealing medication?"

"Young woman, you are emotional."

Emily's face became still. "That answer used to silence me. It will not work again."

Federal agents searched the estate offices. In a locked cabinet behind Carter's desk, they found dossiers on Nathan, Emily, Leonard Price, county officials, and competing landowners. Each file listed weaknesses: debt, affairs, medical conditions, immigration status, children.

The Vale family did not negotiate.

They mapped pressure points.

Nathan's dossier was thicker than the others. It included photographs of Claire during cancer treatment, Emily at school, and Nathan visiting military cemeteries. The final page contained a recent image of a storage barn on Hale Farm.

Across the bottom, someone had written: SEARCH AFTER TRANSFER. FALCON MATERIAL MAY REMAIN ON SITE.

William had wanted more than lithium.

He believed Nathan still possessed evidence from the original Falcon investigation.

Nathan looked at Rhodes. The general understood immediately.

Years earlier, Nathan had hidden duplicate records where official searches would never find them. Claire knew the location. Before her death, she made him promise to reveal them only if the people involved threatened Emily.

That promise had just become active.

Nathan told Rhodes they needed to reach the farm before Vale's men did.

A security officer interrupted. Three vehicles had left the estate during the helicopter landing. Traffic cameras showed them heading toward Madison County.

Carter smiled through a bruised cheek. "You should have signed."

Emily turned on him. "What did you send there?"

"People who know how to find what your father buried."

Nathan moved toward the doors. Rhodes ordered a helicopter prepared.

William Vale blocked his path with a cane.

"You are an old man protecting ghosts," the senator said.

Nathan looked down at him.

"No. I am a father protecting the living. The ghosts are coming for you."

Thunder shook the estate as Nathan, Emily, Rhodes, and a federal recovery team ran into the rain.

Behind them, agents placed Carter and Victoria under temporary detention.

But before the helicopter lifted, Emily saw Carter secretly press a second phone against his leg.
