Chapter 6 - FIRE AT HALE FARM

The helicopter crossed the county in twelve minutes.
From the air, Nathan saw flames before he saw the farmhouse. The western storage barn burned against the storm, orange fire twisting through black smoke. Three SUVs stood near the lower field. Men moved between them carrying cases.
Emily gripped the restraint straps. "What is in that barn?"
"Your mother's records," Nathan said.
Claire had not merely known about Falcon One. Before becoming ill, she had worked as a forensic accountant for a federal inspector general. She helped Nathan trace campaign donations, shell companies, and missing defense funds. The evidence was too dangerous to keep in military channels compromised by William Vale.
They hid copies inside the farm's original seed vault beneath the barn.
The helicopter landed beyond the orchard. Federal agents advanced toward the property while Rhodes coordinated with local police. Nathan and Emily followed despite orders to stay back.
Inside the farmhouse, drawers had been ripped open. Family photographs covered the floor. Emily found Claire's wedding portrait crushed beneath a muddy boot print.
She picked it up with shaking hands.
Nathan heard movement upstairs.
A masked intruder burst from the hallway. Nathan drove him against the wall. The man's radio fell, and a voice shouted through it, "Vault team, status?"
The agents restrained him. Emily recognized the tattoo on his wrist. He worked security at Vale Crest Estate.
Outside, the barn roof collapsed.
Nathan ran into the rain. Beneath the burning structure, a concrete hatch remained intact. Two men were attaching explosive charges to it.
Agents ordered them to surrender. One fired. Bullets struck the tractor beside Nathan. Emily dropped behind a stone wall. Nathan moved through the smoke, using farm equipment as cover, and reached the first attacker before he could trigger the charge.
The second man escaped toward the woods with a metal document case.
Emily saw him and followed.
"Emily!" Nathan shouted.
She ignored him. For months Carter had taught her to doubt every instinct. Now one instinct was clear: do not let them steal her mother's work.
She caught the man near the creek. He turned, raised a pistol, and ordered her to stop. Emily looked terrified because she was terrified. Courage did not erase fear; it gave fear a direction.
She threw a fistful of wet soil into his eyes and slammed the case against his wrist. The pistol fell into the creek. Agents reached them seconds later.
Inside the seed vault, Nathan found waterproof trunks exactly where Claire had left them. The documents connected William Vale to illegal defense sales, bribed officials, and a decades-old operation that had cost American lives.
One file was marked CARTER VALE.
Emily opened it.
Her fiancé had been under investigation before he met her. He approached her after learning she was Nathan Hale's daughter. Every accidental meeting, every romantic surprise, every step toward marriage had been planned.
Tucked inside was a photograph taken two weeks earlier. Carter stood beside a man at a private airstrip, exchanging a package.
Rhodes identified the man as Viktor Saran, an international arms broker.
The wedding fraud was only one piece.
Carter intended to use the farm's private airfield permit to move stolen military guidance systems out of the country.
Then Nathan's satellite phone rang.

Carter's voice came through.
"You found the files," he said. "Now come back to the estate alone, or Emily's best friend dies in your place."
