Chapter 1 - Before Anyone Takes Another Dollar

Evan Whitmore tore Lily’s wedding necklace from her throat because his mother wanted the gift safe opened before the cake was cut.
The pearls burst into the air like tiny white teeth.
The chain snapped.
Lily stumbled backward, one hand flying to her torn lace neckline, the other reaching for balance that was no longer there.
Behind her, the champagne tower collapsed.
Glass crashed across the marble floor.
Gold liquid spread beneath the crystal chandeliers while hundreds of wedding guests gasped in their seats.
For one second, the entire luxury hotel ballroom froze.
The tall white cake stood beside the locked black wedding-gift safe.
The safe was still closed.
That was what made Victoria Whitmore furious.
She stood in her emerald gown and diamonds with one hand gripping the safe handle, her face cold with the kind of anger rich people disguise as authority.
“Blake needs that money tonight,” she had said.
Lily had stepped between her and the safe, one palm raised.
“It belongs to both of us.”
That was when Evan lunged.
Not shouted.
Not argued.
Lunged.
His fist hooked around Lily’s platinum necklace, the one with pearl accents her late grandmother had worn on her own wedding day.
Then he yanked backward with enough force to tear the chain apart and rip the lace at Lily’s collar.
“Apologize to my mother!”
Now Lily stood beneath the chandelier, surrounded by broken champagne glasses and falling pearls, holding her torn gown closed with one hand.
Tears slipped down her face.
But she did not collapse.
Evan advanced behind her, breathing hard, his black tuxedo still perfect except for the rage on his face.
Victoria reached toward the safe again.
Lily’s voice came out quiet.
“Touch that box and you’ll regret it.”
Victoria smiled.
“You have no idea what this family can do to you.”
Then a heavy impact shook the locked ballroom doors.
Every head turned.
The handles strained.
Another impact.
The doors opened only a few inches.
A woman’s silhouette appeared in the gap, one hand gripping a black briefcase, the other holding a raised document.
Evan froze.
Victoria’s smile slowly disappeared.
The woman’s voice carried across the ballroom.
“Before anyone takes another dollar…”
She stepped into the light.
Lily did not know whether to feel saved or terrified.
May you like
Because the woman at the door was Adrienne Cole.
And Adrienne never arrived unless something had already gone very wrong.
