Chapter 9 - The New Beginning

Tears streamed down Hadley’s face as she accepted the massive promotion. In a single night, her entire life of poverty and fear had been completely erased. She would never have to worry about buying medicine or a warm coat for Mae ever again.
Jude walked her to her small apartment in the city, carrying Mae’s diaper bag.
Before he left, Hadley reached into her pocket. She pulled out a small, slightly crushed candy cane she had bought from the vending machine earlier that week.
"Merry Christmas, Mr. Tolbert," Hadley smiled, handing it to him. "Thank you for being our guardian angel tonight."
Jude took the cheap candy cane. He looked at the struggling mother and the sleeping baby, realizing that for the first time in five years, the heavy, suffocating darkness of his sister's death felt a little bit lighter.
He had spent years hiding in the dark. Tonight, he had stepped into the light to save a life.
"Merry Christmas, Hadley," Jude whispered.
The next morning, the Tolbert family had their traditional Christmas breakfast in Sequoyah Hills. Jude’s mother was shocked when the front door opened and her son actually walked in, holding a cheap vending machine candy cane, with a genuine smile on his face for the first time in years.
Hadley became the most respected manager the candy warehouse ever had. The toxic culture was destroyed, and the staff was treated with absolute dignity.

And every Christmas Eve, Jude Tolbert would leave his office, walk down to the night operations floor, and personally hand a brand-new, beautifully wrapped toy to a little girl named Mae, who would always reach up and hug the quiet man who saved her life.
Do you think Darla’s firing was justified, or should she have been given a second chance after eleven years?
