Chapter 4 - The Room That Disappeared

The original Vale House floor plans showed a Room 317 at the western end of the third floor.
Current hotel plans showed a linen storage room.
Daniel Mercer accompanied Detective Ortiz during the search. Victoria's attorneys objected, but a judge authorized entry based on the evidence recovered from the handbag.
The storage room was narrow, windowless, and packed with folded sheets. Its rear wall appeared solid until Daniel noticed one strip of newer molding.
Behind it was a door.
The brass key fit.
The hidden room smelled of dust and old paper. Its furniture had been removed, but outlines remained on the faded carpet. A telephone jack had been cut from the wall. One section of wallpaper carried dark rectangular marks where framed pictures once hung.
Inside the closet, they found a steel lockbox.
The key opened that too.
The box contained copies of hotel ownership records, handwritten notes, audio cassettes, and a photograph of Anna holding a newborn baby.
On the back were two words.
My Victoria.
Ortiz stared at the image.
The infant was not named Ellie.
The date was thirty years old.
That would make the child a grown woman now.
Daniel looked toward the hidden room's only air vent.
"Why would Anna hide documents inside her own hotel?"
"Because she believed someone inside the hotel was watching her," Ortiz said.
They found confirmation on one of the tapes.
Anna's voice was shaky but clear.
She said Victoria had not merely taken the hotel. She had altered debt notices, intercepted correspondence, and bribed an accountant to manufacture missed payments. Anna had discovered the fraud after the arbitration.
She planned to reopen the case.
Then the recording changed.
Anna began speaking about a baby.
Years earlier, while both women were in college, Anna gave birth to a daughter. She was unmarried and terrified. Victoria helped arrange a private adoption through a family attorney.
Anna later learned the adoption had never been completed legally.
The child was placed with a couple connected to Victoria's family.
The final tape ended with Anna saying she believed Victoria had used the child's identity as leverage in the hotel dispute.
The name on the placement record was missing.
But the phrase on the back of the photograph—My Victoria—was not an expression of ownership.
It was the child's name.
Detective Ortiz returned to the lobby footage.
Victoria Hale had been born Victoria Vale.
Her original birth certificate had been sealed.
Anna was not her former business partner alone.
Anna was her biological mother.
The revelation explained the terror in Victoria's face.
It did not explain Ellie.
If Anna was Victoria's mother, then who was Ellie's mother?
The answer came from the silver locket.
Inside was a tiny photograph that had been hidden beneath the visible one. Forensic technicians separated the layers and found a newer image beneath the glass.
It showed Anna, much older, standing beside a young woman who looked like Victoria at twenty-five.
The woman held a baby.
The baby was Ellie.
