Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Walked Away

The cabin produced DNA belonging to Anna Vale.
She had been alive.
Whether she was still alive remained uncertain.
The food receipts were ordered through prepaid accounts. Security cameras at nearby roads showed a dark utility vehicle arriving twice each month. The license plate was concealed.
Jonah recognized the vehicle.
It belonged to a charitable foundation created by Richard Hale.
The foundation still operated under a board of three trustees, including Victoria's longtime attorney, Malcolm Sloane.
Sloane had arrived at the hotel within minutes of the lobby incident.
He had also supervised the sealed arbitration that transferred the Vale House to Victoria.
When police attempted to question him, he invoked attorney-client privilege and denied knowledge of the cabin.
Financial records contradicted him.
Payments from the foundation covered the cabin's utilities, medical deliveries, and a private caretaker.
The caretaker was found at Nashville International Airport attempting to leave the country.
Her name was Marjorie Pike.
She told investigators Anna had been confined after Richard's men intercepted her on the way to meet federal agents. Richard did not kill her because he needed access to records only Anna could decode.
After Richard died, Sloane continued the confinement to protect himself and other investors.
Three days before the hotel gala, Anna escaped.
Marjorie did not know where she went.
Claire wept when Ortiz told her.
Ellie did not.
"She said she would come back," the child whispered. "She always comes back when she promises."
Victoria heard the news from her attorney.
For two days, she refused public comment. The board of Hale Grand Hospitality suspended her. Sponsors withdrew from events. Guests canceled reservations.
The empire she had protected at every cost began collapsing because of one torn handbag.
Yet the most painful consequence came privately.
Claire allowed Victoria to see Ellie only once, in the presence of Rachel and Detective Ortiz.
Victoria sat across from the child.
The mark on Ellie's shoulder had faded.
Victoria looked at it anyway.
"I should not have touched you," she said.
Ellie watched her carefully.
"Why did you?"
Victoria could have blamed fear, humiliation, or misunderstanding.
Instead, she said, "Because I believed anything taken from me had to be fought for."
"Even if it wasn't yours?"
Victoria lowered her eyes.
"Especially then."
The honesty was ugly, but it was honest.
Ellie placed the locket on the table without pushing it toward her.
"Grandma Anna said you were scared before you were mean."
Victoria's face tightened.
"She said that?"
"She said being scared doesn't make hurting people okay."
Victoria nodded once.
Ellie took the locket back.
"I don't forgive you yet."
Victoria did not ask her to.
That evening, an anonymous call reached Detective Ortiz.
A woman said Anna was alive and watching the investigation.
She would return when Malcolm Sloane could no longer reach Ellie.
Before Ortiz could trace the call, the line went dead.
The voice was weak.
May you like
But Claire recognized it.
It belonged to her grandmother.
