Chapter 2 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE ROOM

The father’s name was Daniel Cole.

He was forty-three, an accountant, divorced, and listed as Avery’s sole custodial parent after the disappearance of his wife, Emily, eighteen months earlier.

Daniel had reported Emily missing.

He had told police she left after a bitter argument and never returned.

The case went cold.

Now he stood handcuffed in the hallway while officers pulled the toy chest away from the wall.

Behind it was a panel cut into the drywall.

No handle.

No hinges visible.

Only a small hole near the base, barely wide enough for a child’s hand.

Mason crouched beside it.

“Who made this?” he asked.

Daniel stared at the floor.

Officer Diaz tightened his grip on Daniel’s arm.

“Answer him.”

“It’s an old laundry chute,” Daniel said.

Mason looked at the opening.

“It goes sideways.”

Daniel’s jaw clenched.

Avery stayed wrapped in a blanket at the far end of the hallway with a female officer beside her. She never took her eyes off the hidden panel.

The dead snake remained on the bed.

Animal control confirmed it was a nonvenomous rat snake. Someone had killed it recently and arranged it deliberately.

The metallic object inside its mouth turned out to be a brass key.

A key to the hidden panel.

Mason inserted it into a small lock concealed beneath the wallpaper.

The panel clicked.

Cold air seeped through the opening.

The smell came next.

Dust.

Mold.

And something chemical.

Mason opened the panel.

Behind the bedroom wall was a narrow crawlspace running between the house’s original frame and a newer interior wall. Electrical wires had been rerouted. Small battery-powered lights had been installed along the floor.

Someone had built a passage.

Not years ago.

Recently.

Mason entered first.

The space was barely wide enough for his shoulders. He moved sideways, flashlight sweeping across insulation, tools, food wrappers, and plastic water bottles.

Ten feet in, he found a mattress.

A blanket.

A child’s drawings taped to the wall.

Every drawing showed the same three people: Avery, a blonde woman, and a man with a black square covering his face.

On the floor lay a second teddy bear identical to Avery’s.

Then Mason heard breathing.

He raised his weapon.

“Police. Show me your hands.”

A figure moved beneath the blanket.

Not a man.

A woman.

She was thin, pale, and barely conscious. Duct tape covered her mouth. Zip ties cut into her wrists.

Mason pulled the tape away.

The woman opened her eyes.

For a moment, she looked at him without understanding.

Then she whispered one name.

“Avery.”

Emily Cole was alive.

Paramedics carried her from the crawlspace while Daniel screamed that it was a mistake.

“She broke into my house!” he shouted. “She’s unstable! She kidnapped herself!”

No one listened.

Avery saw her mother on the stretcher and ran.

The little girl climbed beside her before anyone could stop her.

Emily lifted one weak hand and touched Avery’s face.

“My baby.”

Avery sobbed into her chest.

Daniel stopped shouting.

He watched from the hallway, handcuffed, as the wife he claimed had abandoned them was carried out alive from inside his daughter’s bedroom wall.

Mason returned to the crawlspace.

Near the mattress, he found a small camera connected to a memory card.

The lens pointed through a tiny hole into Avery’s bedroom.

Someone had been watching her sleep.

Next to the camera was a notebook.

The first page contained a single sentence written in Daniel’s handwriting.

SHE WILL TELL ME WHERE EMILY HID IT.

The next page listed dates.

Beside each date was the same word.

Snake.
