Chapter 8 - THE MEN ABOVE HALE

Senator Crane chaired the state committee responsible for police funding and judicial appointments.

He had publicly praised Lieutenant Hale as a model officer.

Privately, he used Hale’s network to bury complaints, intimidate witnesses, and redirect government contracts.

Charles Voss handled the legal side.

Daniel moved stolen money through shell companies.

The blue-box records connected all of them.

But without the original memory cards, prosecutors needed testimony.

Daniel agreed to cooperate in exchange for protection.

Hale refused.

Voss asked for a deal.

Emily prepared to testify.

Avery was moved to a protected foster residence with her mother while the court reviewed custody.

Mason visited them two days before the grand jury hearing.

Avery sat at the kitchen table drawing.

This time, the picture showed only two people: herself and Emily.

Mason was standing near the edge of the page.

“You forgot my hair,” he said.

Avery smiled faintly.

“You wear a hat.”

It was the first time he heard her joke.

Then she drew something in the corner.

A small red circle.

“What is that?”

“The watching light.”

Mason crouched beside her.

“Where did you see it?”

“At Grandma’s blue box.”

The music chest contained a camera.

Someone had known when Mason opened it.

The entire rescue had been monitored.

Mason returned to the evidence facility.

Technicians found a transmitter hidden beneath the chest’s brass plate.

The signal had connected to a state government network.

Crane knew exactly what police had recovered.

The grand jury hearing was a trap.

He planned to destroy the witnesses before they testified.

Chief Warren canceled the public transport route and created three decoy convoys.

Emily and Avery were moved through an underground courthouse entrance.

Daniel traveled separately.

Mason rode with him.

Halfway there, the armored vehicle stopped.

The driver turned around.

It was not an Ashford officer.

Mason reached for his weapon.

The driver fired a stun device.

Pain exploded through Mason’s body.

When he woke, Daniel was gone.

The vehicle sat inside a parking garage beneath the state capitol.

Mason’s wrists were tied.

Senator Crane stood in front of him.

“You are very persistent,” Crane said.

Mason pulled against the restraints.

“Where’s Daniel?”

“Correcting his mistake.”

Crane held up a phone showing a live video feed.

Daniel stood inside the courthouse maintenance corridor holding an explosive vest.

Emily and Avery were fifty yards away.

Crane leaned closer.

“If Daniel reaches them, the evidence and the witnesses disappear together.”

May you like

Mason looked at the clock on the wall.

The hearing began in eight minutes.
