Chapter 15 - THE SENATOR’S CHOICE

Noah saw the weapon aimed at his mother.
He tore the IV from his arm and tried to sit up.
His blood pressure crashed instantly.
Evelyn moved toward him.
Lena moved toward the senator.
Judge Vale moved toward the emergency exit.
Everything happened at once.
Caroline rolled from the bed and struck Paul Blake’s knees with the metal IV pole. He fired into the floor.
Lena tackled him.
One federal agent intercepted Vale at the door.
The judge shot him in the shoulder and ran.
Malik chased him into the service tunnel.
Evelyn stabilized Noah while Maya compressed the fresh bleeding from his IV site.
Caroline crawled toward her son.
“I’m here.”
Noah looked at her through half-closed eyes.
“You left me.”
Caroline broke.
“They took me.”
He turned his face away.
The wound between them was deeper than surgery.
Lena handcuffed Senator Blake.
He did not resist.
He looked at Noah and said, “Everything I did was to protect our future.”
Caroline stared at him.
“You approved testing on your own child.”
“He was the only subject Vale could not trace back to the hospital.”
“You used him as cover.”
“I used his access.”
Noah began crying silently.
Evelyn wanted to strike the senator.
Instead she leaned over Noah.
“Look at me. Your father’s choices are not your fault.”
Paul Blake laughed bitterly.
“She says that now. Wait until the press learns she operated while suspended.”
Lena pulled him to his feet.
“The press is about to learn a lot more.”
Malik returned with blood on his sleeve.
“Vale escaped through the maintenance tunnel.”
“Where does it lead?” Lena asked.
“Courthouse annex.”
Of course it did.
A hospital hidden beneath a court.
Medicine beneath law.
Each protecting the other.
The agents secured Ward C.
They found twenty-one archived tissue samples, falsified death reports, illegal consent forms, and audio recordings of meetings between Halpern, Vale, Blake, and pharmaceutical executives.
But Halpern disappeared during the blackout.
Someone had helped him leave.
Evelyn knew the hospital still contained loyalists.
By dawn, national media surrounded St. Catherine’s.
The hospital issued a statement denying administrative knowledge of the hidden ward.
Board members claimed Halpern acted alone.
Senator Blake’s staff called the arrest politically motivated.
Judge Vale’s office said he had been kidnapped.
Every powerful person told a different lie.
Evelyn gave no interviews.
She stayed beside Noah.
Caroline slept in the next room under guard.
At noon, Noah’s condition worsened.
The clotting compound remained active in his body. Tiny vessels began failing in his kidneys and lungs.
Evelyn reviewed the trial files.
There was an antidote.
Compound R-7.
Only one dose had ever been produced.
The records showed it stored in Vale Biologics’ research vault.
Lena requested a warrant.
The assigned judge denied it.
Another judge approved it.
The vault was empty when agents arrived.
Security footage showed Halpern entering at 5:12 a.m.
He left carrying a refrigerated case.
Then Evelyn received a call from an unknown number.
Halpern’s voice.
“I have the antidote.”
“What do you want?”
“Ward C evidence. Every copy.”
“You know that’s impossible.”
“Then choose.”
In the background, Evelyn heard train brakes.
A station announcement.
Halpern was at Union Terminal.
He continued.
“One child for the truth, Dr. Cross.”
Noah’s heart rhythm changed on the monitor.
May you like
Evelyn looked at the boy she had already saved once.
Then she said, “Tell me where to meet.”
