silent

Chapter 1

Mrs. Sterling held the open velvet jewelry box in one hand like it was a weapon.

The diamond necklace was gone.

The marble foyer of the Beverly Hills mansion fell silent beneath the chandelier.

Brenda stood near the grand staircase in her dark green evening gown, one hand pressed delicately to her chest, wearing the kind of fake shock only wealthy people practiced well.

Marianne Escalante stood beside the shattered glass table, gripping her brown leather handbag.

She looked from the empty jewelry case to Andrew.

Her husband.

The man who had promised to protect her in this house.

Mrs. Sterling’s voice cut through the foyer.

“She stole my necklace.”

Marianne’s face went pale.

“No.”

Andrew turned toward her.

His navy suit was perfect.

His expression was not.

It was rage mixed with relief, as if his family had finally given him permission to become cruel.

“Andrew,” Marianne whispered, “you know I didn’t.”

He crossed the marble in three fast steps.

His hand closed around her throat area and drove her backward.

Marianne gasped, grabbing his wrist.

Her handbag slipped from her hand and hit the floor.

Then Andrew shoved her down hard.

Her body struck the marble beside the shattered glass table.

Guests gasped from the hallway.

Brenda recoiled with one hand over her mouth, but her eyes gave her away.

She was enjoying it.

Andrew stood over Marianne.

“Get on your knees and get out!”

For one second, Marianne stayed on the floor.

Breathing.

Shaking.

Humiliated.

Then something in her face changed.

She pushed herself up to one knee.

The chandelier light caught the tears in her eyes, but none fell.

She looked directly at Andrew.

“Tomorrow, all of you will beg me for forgiveness.”

Mrs. Sterling laughed.

Brenda laughed too.

Andrew shook his head.

“You’re nothing without this family.”

Marianne slowly stood.

She picked up her handbag and walked toward the open front door.

Behind her, the laughter followed.

Then a black SUV pulled up outside the front gate.

A corporate security aide stepped out in a black suit and opened the rear door with immediate respect.

The laughter stopped.

The aide looked at Marianne.

“Mrs. Escalante, your father is waiting. The lawyers activated the clauses.”

Andrew’s face changed.

Mrs. Sterling stopped breathing.

Marianne paused at the gate and half turned back.

She lifted her glowing phone.

Her voice was icy.

“Freeze everything. Starting today.”

No one moved.

Because in that single moment, the Sterling family realized they had not thrown out a thief.

They had thrown out the woman whose name was quietly holding their entire empire together.
