Chapter 3

Then came the necklace.

The diamond necklace was supposed to be Mrs. Sterling’s most precious heirloom.

That was another lie.

Marianne had seen the insurance certificate weeks earlier by accident.

The necklace was purchased eighteen months ago, not inherited.

Brenda had helped choose it.

Mrs. Sterling had planned the accusation carefully.

A private family reception at the mansion.

A few board members present.

Enough guests to create shame.

Not enough to create a scandal they could not control.

The necklace would vanish.

The velvet case would appear.

Marianne would be accused.

Andrew would “discover” he had married a woman beneath him.

Then Mrs. Sterling would offer a quiet solution.

A private separation.

A release of Escalante’s hold on the Sterling debt.

No court.

No police.

No reputation damage.

Just Marianne leaving in humiliation while the Sterlings kept the financing.

It might have worked on someone desperate to belong.

But Marianne had stopped wanting to belong three weeks earlier.

That was when she found Andrew’s message to Brenda.

Once she’s gone, the financing stays. Mother will handle the necklace. Don’t panic.

Brenda had replied:

I’m not panicking. I’m waiting.

Marianne forwarded both messages to her father.

Rafael responded with four words.

Let them finish it.

So she did.

She walked into the foyer with the brown leather handbag, knowing the necklace was hidden in Brenda’s clutch.

Knowing the hallway camera had already recorded it.

Knowing Mrs. Sterling would raise the empty jewelry box.

Knowing Andrew would be forced to choose.

He chose wrong.

His hand around her throat area ended whatever hope remained.

His shove onto the marble did not break her.

It activated everything.

Outside the mansion gate, the corporate aide kept the SUV door open.

“Your father is on the secure line,” he said quietly.

Marianne looked back once more.

Andrew was standing in the doorway now.

Brenda behind him.

Mrs. Sterling still holding the empty necklace case like a prop from a play that had lost its audience.

Andrew’s voice cracked.

“Marianne, wait.”

She held up the phone.

“I waited all night.”

His eyes flickered toward the aide.

“What clauses?”

Marianne looked at him for a long moment.

“The ones you signed without reading.”

Mrs. Sterling stepped forward.

“You cannot threaten this family.”

Marianne’s smile was small and cold.

“I’m not threatening you. I’m notifying you.”

At that exact second, Andrew’s phone vibrated.

Then Mrs. Sterling’s.

Then Brenda’s.

Then the phones of every Sterling board member inside the mansion.

Escalante Holdings had frozen the emergency credit facility.

All pending transfers suspended.

Sterling Global Properties placed under creditor review.

Andrew’s executive authority temporarily revoked pending investigation.

Mrs. Sterling’s discretionary accounts locked.

Board emergency meeting scheduled.

Reason listed:

Misconduct trigger involving Marianne Escalante.

Andrew stared at his phone as if the screen had slapped him harder than any hand could.

Brenda whispered, “What does that mean?”

May you like

Marianne answered without looking at her.

“It means the party is over.”
