Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured through the towering arched windows of the Cole estate, casting bright, cinematic pools of light across the pristine marble floor of the grand foyer. The mansion was a fortress of unimaginable wealth, yet it usually hummed with a dark, suffocating tension. Today, however, that tension was hilariously punctured.
Emma Hayes stood near the sweeping mahogany staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs. She smoothed the crisp white apron of her pale-pink maid uniform, her soft blonde-brown hair pinned in a loose updo. Her fair, rosy skin was pale with anxiety as she watched her three-year-old daughter, Nora, command the center of the room.
Nora, dressed in an elegant yellow dress, white socks, and tiny yellow shoes, was currently wearing an oversized black silk tie that draped all the way down to her knees. It wasn’t just any tie; it was Adrian Cole’s tie.
Adrian, the feared and immensely powerful Connecticut Mafia Boss, stood near the doorway. Tall, muscular, and ruggedly handsome, his deeply masculine presence usually struck terror into anyone who crossed his path. Today, wearing an open-collar black dress shirt and tailored black trousers, his heavily tattooed forearms crossed over his broad chest, he simply watched. His dark hair and light stubble framed a face that was completely unreadable.
Nora marched across the marble floor, carrying her tiny yellow toy purse exactly like a businessman’s briefcase. Several heavily armed guards and estate staff stood frozen in the periphery, staring in absolute, breathless silence.
"Nora, sweetie," Emma whispered, taking a hesitant step forward. "Come here, please."
"I am working, Mommy," Nora announced cheerfully, her bright American accent echoing in the vast space. "I have big business to do."
Adrian’s men exchanged panicked glances, but no one dared to move. Adrian’s intense, commanding presence demanded absolute stillness. He watched the little girl with a terrifyingly calm calculation.
"Nora," Emma tried again, her voice trembling slightly. "Give Mr. Cole his tie back."
"No," Nora replied simply, without an ounce of fear. She stopped in the center of the room, puffing out her small chest.
She lifted her bare wrist, tapping it with a tiny finger as if checking a luxury wristwatch. Then, she reached into her yellow dress pocket, pulled out a plastic toy phone, and pressed it to her ear. She furrowed her blonde brows, imitating Adrian’s signature, terrifyingly serious expression.
"Handle it," Nora said into the plastic phone, her voice dropping an octave in a hilarious attempt to mimic Adrian’s deep baritone.
One of the guards choked back a gasp. Emma felt the blood drain from her face.
"Nora!" Emma gasped, rushing forward.
Before Emma could reach her, Nora took several exaggerated, commanding steps toward the front door. Suddenly, her little yellow shoe caught the bottom of the long black silk tie. She tripped, tumbling forward onto the marble.
Emma cried out, but Nora didn't cry. The little girl immediately pushed herself up, dusted off her yellow dress, and straightened her posture with ridiculous, unbothered dignity, acting as if the fall was entirely intentional.

For a second, the foyer was silent as a tomb. Then, a sound broke the quiet—a deep, resonant sound that no one in the room had heard in years.
Adrian Cole burst into genuine, rich laughter.
