Chapter 1 - The Abandoned Child

The modern American suburban kitchen was bathed in bright, beautiful daytime lighting. Stainless steel appliances gleamed next to a heavy wooden dining table. Outside the open front door, a sunny, incredibly peaceful neighborhood street was visible.
But inside the house, the atmosphere was completely suffocating.
Molly, a twelve-year-old girl with wavy blonde hair, was standing completely alone in the quiet kitchen. She wore a light purple floral dress with a white knitted cardigan. She was holding a heavy jar of peanut butter, trying to unscrew the lid to make her only meal of the day.
Suddenly, the heavy click of a key turning in the front door echoed through the silent house.
The door violently swung open.
Molly completely froze in absolute, breath-stealing terror. Her hands gripped the peanut butter jar so tightly her knuckles turned stark white. Her father and her stepmother weren't supposed to be home for another week.
"Who's there?" Molly gasped, her voice a breathless, panicked whisper, fully expecting a violent intruder to walk into the kitchen.
Heavy, purposeful footsteps crossed the hardwood floor of the foyer.
A seventy-something woman with short, curly white hair stepped through the kitchen doorway. It was Evelyn, Molly’s grandmother. She wore a dark green button-down shirt, beige trousers, and carried a brown leather shoulder bag.
