Chapter 12 - Vanessa Eventually Lost The Thing She Valued Most

Vanessa did not lose her wealth.

She did not become homeless.

No secret will appeared to punish her.

No one stripped her bank accounts.

Life rarely delivers consequences that cleanly.

What changed was reputation.

The wedding footage never became public through me or the venue.

We protected guest privacy.

But enough people had witnessed the scene themselves.

Stories traveled.

Then other stories surfaced.

A private club declined to renew a committee role she held.

A charity board quietly chose another donor representative after staff complained about how she treated event workers.

One event planner told a mutual acquaintance:

“We don’t care how large her table booking is. My team won’t work her events.”

That sentence reached Vanessa.

Apparently it devastated her.

Because money had always purchased service.

She had confused service with submission.

Now professionals were deciding her money was not worth the treatment required to earn it.

Richard told me about some of this once.

I said:

“I don’t want updates.”

He looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if I keep checking whether she’s suffering, she still controls part of my attention.”

Richard smiled.

“That sounds expensive.”

“What?”

“Therapy.”

I laughed.

“Very.”

I stopped asking about Vanessa after that.

Mostly.
