Chapter 4 - The Video Had Audio
The ballroom security system recorded everything.
That was both terrible and fortunate.
One ceiling camera captured the side of the dance floor.
The cake.
Me crouched beside it.
Vanessa standing over me.
The sweep.
The fall.
No ambiguity.
Another camera nearer the DJ booth had directional audio.
The recording was not perfect.
But her words were clear.
“Stay on your knees—that’s where people like you belong.”
Then mine.
“You really want to do this in front of everyone?”
Then the sweep.
Then her:
“You... you just touched me?!”
Then:
“You wanted everyone watching. Now they are.”
Watching myself was awful.
My supervisor played it once during the internal review.
I hated how calm I looked before the sweep.
If I had looked startled or panicked, maybe I could have told myself my body reacted instinctively.
It hadn’t.
I had chosen the move.
One deliberate retaliatory action.
I told my supervisor:
“I violated force policy.”
He stared at me.
“Yes.”
“I know.”
“Why are you making my job easier?”
“Because the video already did.”
He almost smiled.
Then didn’t.
The venue’s policy permitted physical intervention when a guest presented a safety threat, physically interfered with operations, or endangered another person.
Vanessa had done none of those things at that moment.
She had been verbally abusive.
My correct options were to stand.
Disengage.
Call a supervisor.
Direct her away from restricted service space.
Document the harassment.
I had skipped all of them.
That became impossible to deny.
But the same recording made something else impossible to deny too.
Vanessa’s version.
She initially told police:
“I asked her politely to move.”
The audio destroyed that.
Then:
“She threatened me first.”
The video showed I did not.
Then:
“She attacked without warning.”
That depended on what “warning” meant.
I had asked whether she wanted to continue humiliating me publicly.
But I had not told her I would use force.
