Chapter 8 - Richard Finally Told Me Why He Spoke Up

I met Richard Hale properly two months after the wedding.
At another venue.
Ironically.
He was attending a fundraiser where my employer had assigned me to an exterior position during my gradual return.
He saw me near the entrance.
Stopped.
“Claire?”
“Yes.”
He smiled slightly.
“How’s the wedding industry treating you?”
“Less cake.”
“That seems safer.”
I laughed despite myself.
Then thanked him for his statement.
He shrugged.
“I described what I saw.”
“You could’ve stayed out of it.”
“Everybody staying out of it was part of the problem that night.”
That answer caught me.
He explained that his father had worked hotel maintenance for thirty years.
Richard grew up watching wealthy guests treat his father as invisible while smiling at executives.
“I’ve hated that kind of behavior since I was ten.”
“Why didn’t you say anything when you walked in?”
“You’d already put her on the floor.”
Fair.
He continued:
“And honestly? At that moment, I didn’t know whether you were the problem.”
That also impressed me.
He had not chosen a side based on image.
He watched.
Then learned.
Then told the truth.
That became the beginning of a friendship.
Nothing dramatic.
No billionaire rescue.
No romance that magically rewarded me for suffering.
Just coffee sometimes.
Messages.

A man who had witnessed one of the worst professional moments of my life and somehow never reduced me to it.
That felt unusual enough.
