Chapter 4 - DANIEL’S HARD DRIVE

Daniel Hayes had been charming when I met him. Smart. Organized. Good with numbers. The kind of man who could make insurance paperwork sound like intelligence. Then our marriage turned cold. Not violent. Secretive. He traveled constantly. Locked his laptop. Took calls outside. Then one day he told me he wanted a divorce. No affair that I ever proved. No big fight. Just gone. I hated him for how cleanly he disappeared. Now Captain Mercer stood in my garage while state investigators photographed a dusty plastic bin. Inside: Daniel’s old tax files. A broken tablet. The external hard drive. Then one envelope. NORA — DO NOT OPEN UNLESS SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME. I had never seen it. It was taped beneath the bin lid. My hands shook. Mercer photographed before opening. Inside was a letter. Nora, If you are reading this because someone mentioned Highway Seven, Lucas Granger, Warren Vale, or Martin Shaw, do not trust the county sheriff. My stomach dropped. Daniel continued: I did not leave because I stopped loving you. I left because I moved money for people who kill loose ends.
I sat down on garage floor. Then: I thought divorce would make you look irrelevant. I hated him more and less at the same time. Then: The hard drive is encrypted. Password is the name of the place you told me you felt safest. I knew immediately. Bluebird. My grandmother’s farm. Then Daniel wrote: If I am alive, do not come looking for me. Alive? I stared. Daniel had not contacted me in four years. Our child? Wait user didn't mention a child. Nora 34, no children defined. We can keep no kids. Then divorce simply protective. Then last line: If I am dead, someone will eventually tell you. I started crying. Mercer said: “We don’t know his status.” Then hard drive. Encryption opened. Folders. Hundreds. Insurance claims. LLC ownership documents. Campaign donation ledgers. Cash deposits. Then one folder: DINER NETWORK. Our diner. Highway Seven Properties. The LLC had been used to cycle fake insurance-loss payments. Small amounts. $8,000. $12,000. $15,500. Repeated. Then funds moved into consulting companies. Then campaign donations. Not necessarily illegal if clean source.

But source was insurance fraud. Then one recipient: VALE FOR COUNTY. Warren sat with investigators later and stared. “I never knew.” Maybe. Then another recipient: SHAW CIVIC STRATEGIES. Martin Shaw. Warren’s chief investigator. There. Then Daniel’s notes: M. SHAW controls sheriff liaison. D. COLE handles collections. Derek. Then: L. GRANGER asking questions. Problem. My chest tightened. Then final entry dated three months ago. Daniel had accessed drive remotely? No, drive local. Maybe logs from cloud sync copied before leaving? Better notes dated four years ago only. Need Lucas current? Then Daniel cannot mention Lucas if vanished four years. Unless Daniel still alive and remotely updated through encrypted sync. Interesting. The drive contained a hidden sync folder. Last update: Four days before Lucas died. Daniel was alive recently. Then one text file: Lucas is in. Nora cannot know. I stopped breathing. Daniel knew Lucas. Then: If Lucas fails, Room 214. There. The motel key. Daniel had orchestrated evidence drop through Lucas. Then Mercer said:
“Your ex-husband may be a cooperating witness.” Or target. Then one more file loaded. Video. Daniel. Older. Thin. Recorded two months earlier. He looked into camera. “Nora, I’m sorry.” Then: “If you’re seeing this, Martin Shaw found me.” The video cut. And for the first time in four years, I knew Daniel had not vanished from me. He had been hiding from the same people now sitting in my diner.
