Chapter 8 - DANIEL CALLS

I told state investigators I wanted to speak to Daniel directly. No secret channels. No running. No disappearing. They resisted. Then I said: “Either he talks to me or I stop cooperating beyond subpoena.” That got attention. Elise Mercer—still recused from evidence handling—supported me. Good. Then Daniel called through secure state line. His face appeared. Older. Beard. Thin. Alive. I felt every emotion at once. “You’re alive.” “Yes.” “You let me think you left.” “Yes.” “You let me think I meant nothing.” His eyes filled. “Yes.” I hated him. Then loved memory of him. Then hated that too. “Why?” “Because Martin Shaw said if I stayed married to you, you would become collateral.” “So you decided for me.” “Yes.” No excuse. Then: “I’m sorry.” “Not enough.” “I know.” Then Kevin Rusk appeared beside him. Not captive. Cooperating. He had fled because Martin ordered him to destroy Lucas evidence and then threatened him. Kevin had deleted the diner camera footage three months earlier. Why? Martin said state task force needed secrecy. Lie. Then after Lucas died, Kevin realized he had helped cover murder.

He panicked. Then Daniel contacted him. How? Daniel had been monitoring network. Then Kevin agreed to cooperate. They were hiding in a federal safe location. Then: “Why forty-eight hours?” Martin was moving money out of shell companies after Derek’s arrest. Destination: Cayman? Too international. Keep domestic layered trusts maybe harder. Let's say cryptocurrency and out-of-state accounts. State/federal task force needed transaction to prove laundering. Then Daniel wanted me to “choose whether I wanted in.” I exploded. “No.” Silence. Then: “I already am in.” Good. Then: “You don’t get to choose whether I know. You only get to choose whether you tell the truth.” He nodded. Then I asked: “Did you love me?” “Yes.” “Did you leave because of me?” “No.” “Did you move dirty money while married to me?” “Yes.” There. Then: “Did you use money to pay our mortgage?” “Yes.” Then: “Did you ever plan to come back?” Long silence. “I hoped.” Not enough. Then: “Did you have another family?” “No.” Good. Then: “Did you kill anyone?” “No.” Then: “Did you know Lucas might die?”

“I knew he was in danger.” Then: “Why send him?” Daniel looked away. “He volunteered.” Not absolution. Then: “Why my diner?” “Because Jack could hide evidence and because you were supposed to look irrelevant.” Again. My ordinary life used as cover. Then I said: “You made my diner a battlefield.” “I know.” Then Daniel told me the forty-eight-hour operation did not need me. Good. He had wanted me to decide whether to release the cashbox evidence publicly if state case collapsed. That was all. I said: “Through lawyer.” He agreed. Then we ended. I cried. Then state task force watched Martin Shaw move $1.8 million through three shell entities. Federal agents froze transfers. Martin arrested for money laundering, obstruction, conspiracy. Not Lucas murder yet. Then Derek cracked. He offered cooperation. He said Martin ordered him to “retrieve the ledger” from Lucas. Then during confrontation, Derek hit Lucas with pistol. Lucas fell. Hit head. Died. Derek panicked. Martin told Kevin to delete footage. Derek insisted he did not intend murder. Maybe manslaughter/felony murder depending law.

Then: “Who told you Daniel’s box was in the diner?” Derek answered: “Martin.” Then: “Who told Martin?” Silence. Then: “Amy.” Everyone froze. Amy screamed: “No!” Derek smiled. “Not Amy Parker.” Then: “Amy’s mother.” Amy went white. Her mother, Linda Parker, worked twenty-five years as Warren Vale’s campaign treasurer. And suddenly the campaign money trail landed directly inside Amy’s family.
