Chapter 5 - MARTIN SHAW

Martin Shaw arrived at the state police office before anyone arrested him. That was confidence. He walked in with counsel. Said he heard his name was being “recklessly circulated.” Then Mercer showed him nothing. Good. She asked: “Do you know Derek Cole?” Martin said: “County has hundreds of Coles.” Then: “Do you know Daniel Hayes?” “No.” Lie? Then: “Lucas Granger?” “Only from news.” Then Mercer asked about Shaw Civic Strategies. He said his wife owned it. True. Then bank records. Insurance-derived money had flowed into the company. He claimed consulting work. Invoices existed. What work? “Risk management.” For shell companies. Then Warren Vale sat in separate room and said: “I hired Martin eight years ago.” Why? He was aggressive. Effective. Good at closing cases. Then: “Did you know he controlled sheriff liaison?” “Yes.” Then: “Did you know he had a consulting company?” “Yes.” Then: “Did you know donors paid it?” “No.” There. Warren’s campaign had accepted donations from people tied to shell companies Martin’s wife consulted for. Potential kickback.

Then Derek. He refused to speak until lawyer. Fine. But my phone recording had captured Warren and Derek recognizing each other. Warren explained he had met Derek once during a courthouse security incident. Derek denied? Doesn't matter. Then Room 214. State police searched the motel. Behind an air vent: A flash drive. Lucas’s. Inside: Audio. Photos. Bank records. Then one video from diner parking lot. Lucas secretly recording through his car windshield. A dark SUV pulls in. Martin Shaw exits. Then Derek. Then local deputy Sean Mercer? Careful same surname as captain Elise Mercer maybe unrelated. Avoid. Use Deputy Kevin Rusk. Lucas’s audio: Martin: Give me the ledger. Lucas: You’re done. Then Derek approaches. The video shakes. Cuts. No murder shown. Then another camera source. Motel dashcam? Wait exterior diner camera missing. Lucas's own car might continue? It cuts due phone removed. Fine. Then state forensic tech recovered GPS. Martin’s SUV remained at diner eleven minutes. Derek’s phone location too. Then Martin said video was fabricated.

Expected. Then Deputy Kevin Rusk was questioned. He had been first officer at Lucas scene. He wrote camera malfunction. Jack said camera did not malfunction. Then investigators seized sheriff IT logs. The exterior footage had been manually deleted at 2:14 a.m. User: KRUSK_K. There. Then Kevin Rusk disappeared. Did not report for shift. Truck found at boat ramp. No body. No note. Then Mercer said: “He’s running.” Maybe. Then Warren received a text from unknown number. ONE WITNESS LEFT. He showed Mercer immediately. Good. Then my phone buzzed. Unknown number. Nora, leave town tonight. Daniel. I knew his phrasing. Then second message: DO NOT TELL MERCER WHERE YOU GO. My skin went cold. Captain Mercer had been the one person I trusted most. Then Daniel sent one final line: Her father built the network. I looked at Elise Mercer through glass. And suddenly the state police captain standing between me and corruption had become part of the family tree I did not understand.
