Chapter 11 - daniel asked tyler the question he had avoided for years
Father and son finally spoke privately two weeks later.
An attorney had advised Daniel not to turn every family conversation into evidence, so they met with a counselor present and stayed away from unresolved legal details.
Daniel asked only one question.
“When did you start believing rules were for everybody else?”
Tyler rolled his eyes.
“You really want to do therapy language now?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I want an answer.”
Tyler blamed Margaret.
“She treated me like an employee.”
“You were an employee.”
“I’m family.”
“So?”
Tyler laughed bitterly.
“That’s easy for you. Grandpa handed you everything.”
Daniel shook his head.
“My father made me work fifteen years before I controlled the commercial barns.”
“Yeah, and then Grandma still gets to tell everybody what to do.”
“Inside her program, yes.”
Tyler looked away.
Daniel waited.
Then the truth surfaced.
“I’m tired of waiting for people to decide I’m ready.”
There it was.
Not hatred.
Not desperation.
Entitlement mixed with humiliation.
Tyler believed his competence should be assumed because he belonged to the family.
Every correction therefore felt like disrespect.
Megan questioning the ride.
Margaret enforcing limits.
Daniel hesitating to promote him.
Each became evidence that others refused to see the man Tyler believed he already was.
Daniel asked:
“And pushing Grandma into the mud?”
Tyler’s jaw tightened.
“She was humiliating me.”
“How?”
“She was going to suspend me.”
“That’s a governance decision.”
“She was doing it at my own family’s event.”
“She hadn’t announced anything.”
Tyler said nothing.
Daniel leaned forward.
“You humiliated her before she could hold you accountable because you wanted to change who looked powerless.”
Tyler’s face changed.
That was exactly it.
He did not admit it aloud.
He didn’t need to.
