Chapter 8 - megan had not lied
Megan Cole nearly left the estate after the Willow incident.
She was twenty-four, not seventeen as some relatives later incorrectly repeated, and had worked for the therapeutic program for eighteen months.
She loved the horses.
She also needed the job.
When Tyler started telling people she had invented concerns because he rejected her romantically, Megan became afraid every professional complaint she made would be treated as personal drama.
She deleted messages.
Stopped attending staff lunches.
Eventually asked Anne Mercer for a transfer.
Margaret noticed.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Megan.”
The young woman started crying.
Then told her everything.
After hours riding.
Tyler mocking therapeutic clients.
Borrowing program horses for friends.
Changing logs.
And most troubling, once telling Megan:
“My dad owns this place. Nobody here is firing me.”
Technically false.
Daniel did not personally own the therapeutic nonprofit.
But Tyler believed family status made operational boundaries optional.
Margaret documented Megan’s statement and urged her to speak with outside counsel.
Megan hesitated.
Then the security drive disappeared.
She panicked completely.
“If he’ll erase cameras, what happens to me if I keep talking?”
Margaret told her:
“You do not have to carry this alone.”
That became the reason she ordered the independent review.
Not revenge.
Not a battle with her grandson.
Protection of a staff member whose credibility was being attacked.
When the drive was recovered, Megan’s account matched the footage closely.
That changed everything.
Daniel apologized to her personally.
“I should have listened the first time.”
Megan answered:
“You should have asked me before deciding why I was talking.”
It was the same lesson Margaret had been trying to teach him.
Evidence first.
Story second.
Daniel had done the reverse whenever Tyler was involved.
