Chapter 13 - tyler lost the role he thought was his by birth
The employment review concluded first.
Tyler was terminated from his paid position in the commercial equestrian operation.
The therapeutic riding board permanently barred him from any staff or volunteer role unless a future board, after substantial rehabilitation and independent review, decided otherwise.
Margaret abstained from that final vote too.
The animal-welfare findings did not show catastrophic abuse.
But they showed deliberate violation of workload restrictions, falsification of records, concealment of footage, and retaliation against a reporting employee.
That was enough.
Tyler’s reaction was predictable.
“So I’m just out?”
Daniel answered:
“Yes.”
“You’re choosing Grandma over me.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“I’m choosing the standards you knew.”
“What am I supposed to do?”
That question revealed how completely Tyler had assumed his future would arrive through the family business.
Daniel did not solve it for him.
“You’re twenty.”
Tyler stared.
“Find work.”
That sounded cruel to several relatives.
Margaret supported it.
Not because she wanted her grandson poor.
Because rescuing him immediately with another family position would teach precisely the wrong lesson.
Daniel continued paying for counseling through the family health plan while Tyler remained eligible.
He offered access to career services.
He did not offer another job.
Tyler moved out of the estate guesthouse two months later.
Not because anyone threw him onto the street.
He had savings and an apartment option near Richmond.
The separation mattered.
For the first time, he had to build a daily life where people did not automatically know his surname before evaluating his behavior.
Whether that humbled him remained to be seen.
Consequences were not personality surgery.
