Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Police arrived at Magnolia before dessert was cleared.

They did not arrest Diane. Not yet.

The reopened financial case was strong, but the investigation into Jonathan and Rebecca's deaths required corroboration. Diane left the restaurant under the protection of her attorney, warning every relative that anyone who repeated "these lies" would face ruin.

Annabelle watched her go through the same doors Thomas had entered.

The private dining room emptied slowly. People who had ignored her for years attempted apologies in soft voices.

Uncle Roger said he had always doubted Jonathan's guilt.

Cousin Melissa claimed she was only a child when the scandal happened.

Others spoke of being pressured by Diane and Daniel.

Annabelle listened until she could no longer bear it.

"You believed the version that cost you nothing," she said. "Please don't call that helplessness."

They left in silence.

Eleanor took Annabelle home to the Mercer estate, a stone mansion overlooking the river. Annabelle had spent much of her childhood there, but after college she moved out and refused Eleanor's money. She wanted one achievement that could not be called charity.

In the library, Thomas explained the legal process. The codicil would be filed the next morning. Diane would challenge it. The company board might attempt to block Annabelle's voting rights until the litigation ended.

"I restore damaged photographs," Annabelle said. "I don't know how to run hotels."

"Neither did your father when he began," Eleanor replied. "He learned."

Annabelle looked at the portrait above the fireplace. Jonathan Mercer had auburn hair like hers and a smile she remembered more as warmth than shape.

"Did he know Diane hated him?"

Eleanor's eyes filled. "He knew she resented him. He did not understand how far she would go. Neither did I."

That night, Annabelle slept in her childhood room.

At 2:13 a.m., breaking glass woke her.

She sat upright.

A shadow moved beyond the balcony doors.

Annabelle reached for her phone, but the doors burst inward before she could unlock it. A masked figure crossed the room, knocked the phone from her hand, and grabbed her by the jacket.

"Where is the original recording?" a man's voice demanded.

"I don't know."

He shoved her against the wall.

"Garrett gave it to you."

A lamp crashed. Footsteps thundered in the corridor. The intruder released her and fled through the balcony as Eleanor's security team entered.

On the carpet lay a brass cuff link.

Thomas arrived before dawn. He examined it beneath the desk lamp.

The face was engraved with the crest of Magnolia Restaurant.

Only senior executives received that design.

Annabelle recognized it from the dinner.

Uncle Roger had worn an identical pair.

When police searched Roger's home, they found the matching cuff link, wet clothing, and a plane ticket for that morning.

He confessed to the break-in within two hours.

But he insisted Diane had not sent him.

"Then who did?" Annabelle asked through the interview-room glass.

Roger raised his head toward her.

"Your grandmother."
